How do you protect spare magazines in your range bag?

I'm always worried that my extra mags might get dinged up regardless of where in my range bag I put them, and they do end up showing some wear after a while rubbing against ammo and such. Just wondering if anybody has any tips to keep them protected. It is a padded bag with the removable padded sleeves for handguns.

Depends, some of my rugs and softcasees have magazine pockets, so that's how they travel. For the others, the bag I use has external pockets, which is right handy.

I've some spare fabric bandoliers, collected up long the way, that will also suffice, in case of need. Stick a mag in to each pocket until you are done. Then wrap them around themselves, and tie off with the carry strap--voila.

I use a large cell phone holder that has elastic sides on it. I can easily fit 4-6 mags in it, and it doesnt take up much room in my range bag.

I like the multiple mag pouch cases from CED: http://www.cedhk.com/show.php/Object582

But, considering that all my mags get dropped on the ground, concrete, rocks, mud, etc., and stepped on, kicked, and pounded in and out of the gun dozens of times at every practice and match, well, I guess I don't worry so much about damage to them from sitting in a range bag! :D

Sam1911,

That is exactly what I was thinking. Most guns, including their magazines, are very durable. They are merely tools. I've actually heard of people using these gun things to fight wars and such. They usually get dirty and dinged up while doing this.:p

I don't own any "safe queens", all of my guns have the finish worn, grip tape on them, and lots of scrapes and dings. The magazines get used until they displease me, and then they are destroyed.

In answer to the OP's question. Just put them in your range bag. You can wrap them in a rag or something if you don't want to use the previously mentioned items.

I put each extra magazine in a separate Crown Royal bag. The bag material is just thick enough to protect each of them very nicely.

I use a large range 'box' instead of a bag and quite honestly I don't bother protecting my range mags. I just chunk them into the range box and go to the range.

I've had the range box for 4 years now and have never had a magazine failure

Something like this? Midwayusa.com

What kind of pretty mags do you have?

There are magazine pouches installed inside a tatical guncase that has a holster. Room for 4 clips. And on the other side is room for up to two long guns and thier clips.

The range box only contains recoil pads, wrenches, snap caps, shooting glasses, hearing protection etc etc etc.. and spare batteries.

The old ghetto gun sock...just joking, we've all done it.

But, where do you put your D&D dice when you do that?

I put magazines in sleeves built into the range bag or in an end/side pocket. Never had a problem.

The wife was about to toss an old makeup bag and I noticed it was the right size for magazines. It had eight pouches, four on each side when opened. I kept it for awhile but got rid of it after some ribbing from a couple of buddies. I did find an a-sexual one and I still use it. :D Don't ask don't tell !!!!:scrutiny:

Hey, I really do use a Crown Royal sack to store my handloading safety glasses. The whole concept of protecting mags against dings and scratches is bizarre to me. I routinely drop them on the ground and don't worry about it.

Ditto the old socks.

I use the dress socks, not the cotton ones. Cotton tends to find a way into the internals.

Thin dress socks.

For those wondering why I care, I've bent the lip on a mag before and then I could never get it to feed right again.

My range bag has mag holders in a seperate pocket. The damage that my mags get in the bag is nothing compared to what they see at a match. They get dropped on concrete, gravel, dirt; they get stepped on and kicked. Mags are consumables in my mind. When they get beat up too bad, they either become practice mags, parts mags or junk.
