I went to the gun show certain in the knowledge that I :

1. Didn't like XDs; and
2. Wanted a new SiG

I took along my most hated gun to trade, a Beretta 9000 Type F in .40S&W. I paid $360 for it 3 years ago and the best I have ever been offered in trade is $150 - it has a few rounds through after all (as I tried repeatedly to master it). I arrived before the show opened and was about the fifth persn through the door. I practically ran around the handgun tables to make sure I didn't miss my dream gun before someone else snatched it up.

I try out SiG after SiG, including a lot of CPOs (no thanks), and I discovered to my horror that the grip on every model save the P239 was just too big for my hands, why have I never noticed this before - it could ruin my career with the SEALs.

Anyhoo, I finally found a dealer with a good selection of top end guns and produced my model 9000 Beretta Nightmare.

"How much you looking for"
"About $200"
"Sounds reasonable"
"Well how about $220 then"
"Ok, but only against a new gun"
"Deal !"

I had already ruled out the SiGs, even though I promised the wife that it was the only gun I would look at (she thinks SiGs are the handgun equivalent of a BMW), the Beretta Vertec fit my hand perfectly, but the safety is slide mounted and I didn't want to trade one Beretta against another anyway.

I picked up the XD, I was curious about this incredibly hot new gun. The dealer had several of the 9mm and .40 models, but only one .45ACP, the 4 inch version.

"Do you have any more of these", I inquired
"Just that one, they never stay in the store for more than a day or so when we get a shipment"

With that I felt the first tingle of "every has one" fever. So I put the gun down, trying hard to forget that I don't like XDs (too top heavy, bad grip angle, squishy trigger etc etc) and the fact that the grip felt perfect for my smaller sized hands in spite of being a double stack .45 (go figure) and even seemed a lot slimmer than the double stack 9mm SiG P226 I was comparing it to.

As I walked around the table looking at the other options, a guy picked up the XD and started to ask questions about it - that was the deciding moment, I realized that he was holding my gun. I walked back around the table and decided that if he put it back down on the table it was mine. As I arrived I heard him say,
"Oh I only want the olive drab frame, guess I'll hold on".

And that was that, it cost me just $350 including tax, NICS and whatever else they charge you these days, sticker was $539 which seems about average in these parts.

One hundred rounds and a single ragged hole at 50 feet later, I was feeling fairly pleased with myself. No buyer's remorse, no dislikes of the gun, no recoil issues, no failure issues - nothing, just contentment.

Oh well, maybe my hands will grow half an inch before the next show, and I'll get that SiG after all

I guess I won't complain about getting mine for $499.00, no tax and no NICS charge. I was just going to compare the 4" XD 45 against a Glock 23 for comparison purposes. Since I don't like buying display guns I asked if they had any brand new ones in the back. When the guy said they did I dithered for about five seconds before telling him to get me one. It's about a quarter inch longer than my 23 and the grip is about a half inch longer, so concealability will not be an issue. This is my first ever .45 so it'll be interesting when I take it out to break it in. I only shot a 1911 one time in 1978 when I was in the Marine Corps and I did not like it at all. But I think I'll like the XD!

XD's

You guy's are going to love your new XD's. My first one was th XD 45 ACP Tactical, I have a XD9 Tactical on order(should be here this week). I think I will buy a XD 40 Tactical. I've never owned a 40 of any kind before. Do I need one? Probably not. Do I want one? You Bet!

Great story!

You got it for an average price, so you did okay.

I just got an XD-45 service gun this week as well, and it's already proving to be a source of great enjoyment. I'm shooting it again today, one benefit of living where I can shoot in my own yard. Since I already owned two .45ACP guns (a 1911 and a Model 22-4 revolver) I have plenty of ammo already!:)

Now the quest is on for a good carry rig, either a pancake or IWB holster.

Man, these things shoot like a dream.

Final note - the range I used for the guns first, and immediate, shooting trip was doing a one day only $30 off price on all XDs, the .45 was $509 - but they didn't have the 4 inch (seems that they sell out even faster than the 5 inch) and there was no guarantee I would have got the same trade in price on my Beretta.

Now I just need to find a source for good quality .45ACP FMJ - even Walmart wants $20 plus tax for a hundred rounds

Great gun though, I can't put it down - how does my wife put up with me, I'm supposed to be clearing the yard

As my friend nitesite Dave has already eluded to, you are going to
enjoy the Springfield XD-.45 ACP. The trigger only gets better, with time.
As I've said before, I got the very first one (4" service model) too land
in the metro Birmingham, AL area (suppose to have been a salesmans
sample), for the very attractive price of $399; NIB with all the GEAR,
box and doc's, and a first production run cover sheet from the sales
manager at Springfield Armory~!:D

"Incredibly hot new gun"

I have seen the ASP is higher than in the past... I am glad I have my stainless XD40 already since it was such a deal.

Nice report, Newton. Mine is at Canyon Creek as we speak for a trigger job, and a set of Dawson FO fixed sights.
I haven't even touched it as of yet, as it went directly from the seller to CC. I do have a case of Georgia Arms 200gr. plated SWC's waiting for it though. :)

Thanks for the good read. I find it annoying that that good gun you buy, whatever it is, always gets such poor trade-in values, especially at gun shows.

Sounds like your deal worked out just fine!
