I was more excited to see my son get his first pheasant than I was to shoot one. When I am waterfowling when I get the birds to commit I won shooting is anticlimactic. I love to take rookies duck and goose hunting.. I call they shoot and I don't have to clean anything. Buck460 hit it right on the head. With my son hunting now I will want to see him take game, but for me who cares. I have killed many deer, ducks, geese, quail, and pheasants. I will probably kill a lot more but it is not as important as it once was.My hunting partner and I are going for ducks and geese on WED. No bands no bang. Now that is selective.

Buck460 has it I too started out blood thirsty,now I don't care too much.
although it was extra special this year to harvest phesants.I took my grandfathers model 10 remington, that grandma bought him for christmas in 1928.
I never got to hunt with him,but I could swear I heard him laughing when I missed.

My wife and I make a living for the 9 of us,Hunting Gathering Fishing and crafting and making artworks.

Food and clothing as well as trade in meat/fish and hides pays the $$$

Im 100% in need of making a "Catch" as we call it, as the killing part is very routine, but blood thirsty I am not.

Were at it 24/7/365, so I guess that makes it a lifestyle.
Sometimes the best Hunters come home with nothing.

Besides , I get to shoot alot... thats the best part.

Like Len S, I've done so much of it that my enjoyment is in the process and a great hunt, by my definition, may, or may not, end with the death of a game animal. It's funny that when I was a lad and could hunt only squirrels and rabbits I dreamed of monster Whitetails and Wyoming and Montana and Arizona and Canada etc. - and now after doing all that - the idea of a day spent squirrel hunting tickles me to pieces.

I hunt at least one or two days per week when at home. If I get something that is great, if not I just write it off to hunting. After all it is hunting. If one got something every time he/she went out it would be called killing. I just like to get out into nature.

Hunted all day yesterday and today for elk and did not see one. Got consolation prize; two very big wild boar sows.

I hunt for 2 reasons:

1 Being with family/ friends.

2 getting away from the world, even if its only for a few hours.


Some of the best hunting trips I have ever been on I never saw the game we were going after.

I want some venison for Christmas so far Im not lucky to kill a deer yet. Im still hoping I can but if not, theres next season. At least I ve scouted several sites now for deer. I know a place where theres lots of squirrels so when its time i can bring my son to kill some.

Mon and Tues forecast will be raining and windy. I might go Wed . Nice to stalk in wet ground, no dry leaves crackling and deer are likely moving---hopefully.

I answered "pretty important"...that said, I (we) do kinda depend on the meat for food...I won't buy meat from the store if I can keep from it.

We would not starve without it...but that's not really the point. I thoroughly enjoy "the hunt"...but I like to eat too.

I voted Not too terribly important; I just like to connect with nature; but occasional meat is nice.

Yeah, I'll shoot at the occasional deer, especially if it's a nice buck, but doesn't matter if I get one or not. One deer, turkey, squirrel a year is enough for a season. Most of the time, if I just see whatever I'm hunting I call it a success.

Didnt get a buck this year. Camped a few times! Actually, nobody I know got one this year. Oh well. I enjoyed the good company, my buzz, big campfire and early morning coffee.

i really would like to get at least one animal per year. but as long as i am seeing deer, even if they are the wrong sex, at least i know it isnt all me. friday, i had a doe come up behind me, and stop 6 feet away from me. i am certain that it was sight, not smell that gave me away. but it sure made my heart rate climb! funny how just a little bit of adrenalin will do that. unfortunatly, either there was no buck behind her, or she successfuly flaged him off before i could see him.

I agree with most people here. Its nice but if I'm not so lucky oh well. Same with fishing sometimes its nice to be out there with friends or family and just talk in a place were cell phones don't interfe.

If the opportunity presents its self I'll take if not oh well their always tommorrow.

I really enjoy my time in the woods. The harvesting of game is actually the icing on the cake. But for where I hunt to not get a deer it would actually have to be a decision not to shoot one. This year I am hunting on a new lease and I have seen on average over 10 deer each time I sit in my stand. I think the most enjoyment though this year has been from shooting so many....with my camera!

My preferred choice would have been...

Extremely important because I need the meat to feed my family, but as long as i can see game and learn a little more about the animal I'm hunting, I don't consider it a total loss.

And that is the truth. This year for example, I didn't fill a single tag, but had some awesome encounters with elk and learned some very important things. My freezers are empty, but I'll make it until next fall, and I'll be that much wiser.

I love to hunt, but I enjoy being out in the woods. When I deer hunt or squirrel hunt I just sit there and read my book when the animal comes along I shoot it. If I don't see anything, so what I just sat in the woods enjoyed the calm and got to read my book.

I don't have to have the biggest deer in the world either. I'll shoot the first thing that comes to me.

I've pretty much gone through the usual transitions. Early years, making a kill was very important. Then, the kill was of lesser importance and the gatherings around the campfire increased in importance. As the years have gone by, I've gotten more into helping others, whether passing along knowledge or making a good hunt camp as a base of operations for the younger folks.

Doesn't mean I'm unwilling to clobber Bambi, of course, but he'd have to be sorta on the bragging side of good, and be close to the jeep trail.
