I'm contemplating buying a second firearm soon, and it got me to wondering -- how many guns can I get before I really need a safe? So, THRers, how many did you have before you bought your first safe/RSC?

You appear to have an interest in firearms and with the very good possibility of purchasing more firearms in the future a safe would not be a bad investment. Just remember to buy the largest safe that you can afford. If you have small children or room mates you have to securely store your firearms. A gun safe can be a substantial investment if you require a fire resistant interior. Otherwise one of the stack-on, security locker, type safe will do .

All of them. Besides children and guests, you need to consider the possibility of being burglarized.

I guess it all depends on how you feel about one of your guns being stolen and used to injure or kill someone. That was the driving force in my getting a safe - the value of the guns was covered by insurance.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Here's what I think I'm going to do. I'm planning on about 6-7 guns for the initial phase, to cover all bases. I figure I need:
1 high-cap pistol (done)
1 black rifle (next)
1 revolver
1 bolt-action rifle
1 shotgun
1 concealable handgun (in case Illinois comes to its senses)
and perhaps an antique of some kind (Mauser, Garand, etc.)
Since the high-capacity pistol and black rifle are in danger of being outlawed here, they're tops on the list. After that, the next purchase will be a safe/RSC. Then I can fill it at my leisure, assuming they don't ban everything else on my list in the meantime.

I held off until I bought my first house, and it also coincided with buying my first more expensive piece, a Colt HBAR. It was like I never realized I needed a safe until then (this is before Al Gore's Internet 
) and I bought a 600lb Liberty and bolted it to the floor. I sold that and bought a much bigger/heavier National Security when I moved to Vegas.
Living in apartments in the 80's without a safe cost me a couple of guns when the convicted murderer next door found he could go into the attic and drop down into any apartment. I lost my finest gun at the time, a S&W N-frame .357, and a Jennings .380 that was horrible. I don't have all my guns in the safe these days, but owning a safe is the smart thing to do. Try to get one big enough for the future, which is very tough!

I started off with a locker style safe. I have children at home so it seems to be a minimun to have the guns locked up. I have a gunvault for the self defense pistol. After my collection grew I bought a liberty fire proof safe. I use the old locker style safe to store ammo in.

Have 2, about time for a third, & I never buy one so heavy or awkward that I need to hire someone with a powered dolly to move it 900 - 1,000 # is just about right, then securely anchor that rascal.

I looked very seriously at buying a nice gun safe but I move so much and that is exactly why I do not own a piano either.

As soon as I realized I was serious about keeping weapons I got a safe.
Buy one now, it's worth it for the peace of mind. Our house was broken into twice about 13 years ago and we had some firearms stolen along with other valuables. It's nice to have a securely locked place to keep the dangerous stuff away from my kids as well as burglers. Nothing is 100% effective but you can make it annoying enough for the scumbags that they won't spend the time to overcome your precautions.

Hmmm...gunvault. Didn't know they made mini-safes like that. I've been fretting over what to do with my SD pistol. I've got it locked with the cable lock that came with it (through the open action), but of course that doesn't prevent theft. Might have to order one of those.
Too many, I bought a very large safe and my collectin/accumulation swiftly outgrew it. The high dollar and more unique models and ones I would absolutely hate to lose go in it. With a couple of exceptions I remove the bolts on the ones that stay out and lock the bolts inside. They would have trouble finding bolts for these models. A long Swiss Vetterli stays out. I do not think a thief would find ammo for it.

In other words: I know you have some big safes but it still gets pretty cramped inside of them when your looking out~

I lock up all my guns. I do not want to loose them or have them fall into the wrong hands.
