How many here have killed a chronograph?

My Caldwell Chrono II was doing real well until I put a .380 round out of my Ruger LCP through the bottom of it.

It didn’t break the electronics, just the horizontal support plastic.

I probably could have fixed it but I wanted a replacement.

After waiting a year while Caldwell said it was “outta stock,” I told the wife I wanted a barrel mounted one for Xmas.

I haven’t used it yet due to fishing being a priority.

But soon I’ll figure it out.

Moral of the story, don’t shoot a gun you can’t hit crap with at 10 yards, through a chronograph at 5 yards.

I've shot two Chronys. Mostly a result of hurrying to beat weather or hurrying to finish so I could get somewhere. See the common theme here?

I have a LabRadar now.
I'm seriously thinking about getting a LabRadar. It definitely looks like a less hassle setup. Especially if other shooters are at the firing line.

A friend of mine worked at the Yuma Proving Grounds years ago.

In those days, ammo tests for field pieces was chronyed with a large coil, wound on a large square built of lumber, hoisted by a big crane into the line of fire.

An errant 120mm Howitzer shot caused the destruction of the coil and tipped the crane over.

Nowadays they just use a radar gun like the cops have, aimed over the gun and it reads the FPS directly.

Dunno if that would work with small arms bullets, tho.

A friend bought a new chrono and set it up in his garage. Within a couple of weeks he shot it.

He couldn't hit a barn if he was inside but managed to trash his chrono.

He bought a bullet trap and missed it a couple of times so he bought a good size piece of plate steel to put behind his bullet trap. Which has a few marks on it.

it will detect the other shooters shots.

Magneto Speed is a good option. Attaches to the barrel

Not going to lie… I’m with your buddy! I get too excited to shoot that I forget all the fundamentals

There are only two kinds of people in this world; ones who have blown up their chronies; and ones that haven't taken it out of the box yet. I'm on number 4 in the last 10 years. I let a "friend" use it with his 9mm and he smoked the screen. When I first started, I did a thru and thru on a buddie's with 165 grain Speer hot core. I did replace it when the misses got upset and said I'd better get my own. She didn't know what a long dark hole she sent me through. I tried the warranty and found that is B.S. What they wanted for warranty was more than what I paid new for it on sale at the local gun shop. But with the new one I am using the sky screen all the time and that is working better than ever before. Be sure going 10 to 12 feet out front on a tripod. I also kept the old sky screen parts so it helps to have extra.

Hmmmm.....

No pictures in this thread of Labradar's with holes through the middle of 'em. I guess it's because they don't sit in front of the muzzle. But I've heard a lot of folks swear & cuss & threaten to shoot theirs on purpose!...LOL

Count me in.

Blasted my Competition Electronics chrono.

Got sloppy. New gun with an optic (higher than irons) plus heavier-recoiling ammo led to a low shot.

.45 acp Underwood 185 gr +P JHP just caught the edge. If it was a FMJ I bet it would have skipped just enough to not destroy the thing.

But instead it launched 10 ft off the table while the assembly came apart in spectacular fashion.

I ordered another but there goes $130.

Anyone else?
I killed two by trying to shoot in too much wind. They crashed to their death.

I’ve never shot one with a firearm.

I did stick an arrow halfway through my first ProChrono though - which was fortuitous timing, in hindsight, as it gave me the excuse to upgrade to the Digital version.

Not yet! Theres 2 kinds of people in the world, those that have and those that will!!! :(

At least 4 kinds:

1) People which don’t use chronographs

2) Those which have shot a chrony

3) Those which use but haven’t shot a chrony

and

4) Those which use chrony’s which can’t be shot

And I suppose, in the interest of fair representation of all creeds, there is a “Class 2B” of folks which have shot MULTIPLE chrony’s…

"So far, so good" with my Magneto Speed.

I didn’t see the actual event, but saw the carnage after a guy shot his Magnetospeed at the check-in for a PRS match this season. Dude forgot to change his shims after he removed his suppressor, ran a bullet right into the gooseneck of the bayonet, and sent the platform halfway out to the 100yrd zero board. I venture there were more folks which had this happen, since the weekend before was a “suppressor only” match, and the following event was normal, so ~200 suppressors came off of rifles in the same few weeks.

I did skip a handful of bullets off of the top of my V3 bayonet a couple of years ago by accidentally using my tapered shims backwards - no damage, no issues thereafter, just a couple of drag marks streaking down the length of the platform, and REALLY high POI and dispersed groups on target - and dialing down didn’t move the group…

I also shot a bullet through the tail of a pen a few years ago - I’d lost my alignment rod and used a pen slid into my brake to align the bayonet… but life is better if you remember to REMOVE the pen before firing… luckily, no harm, no foul, and I even still hit the 500yrd 66% IPSC I was using as my catch target! I just happened to notice a strange muzzle blast in my left eye, then blue rain everywhere on the grass in front of me :uhoh:

[LabRadar] will detect the other shooters shots.

Only if the sensitivity is wrong. LabRadars get deployed every weekend with dudes laying side by side on the zero board line with multiple LR’s, and we manage. But if guys really want to avoid picking up others (or use it on suppressed rifles or air rifles, even bows) the inertial triggers are foolproof.

I didn't so much "kill a chrono" as... put me out of its misery.

My first chrono had a menu system that was not self-explanatory. I had to read the manual every time it was used. I hated that thing!

I have come close. I shot the defuser wire that caused the plastic panels inside to explode. I got the inside parts put back in & working but the wires needed some serious repair work before they would work again. That's when I found if you have a fully over cast day you don't need the defuser covers, the clouds act as the defuser.

Man, last year my buddy shot mine. I replaced it, then proceeded to shoot my new one. Actually, I shot the shade, but it flipped the chrony off the table it was sitting on and smashed the screen on a rock. Replaced it again. My daughter then proceeded to shoot the new one square in the front with my Coonan. Was a perfect shot too, 125 JHP entered the front, traversed the entire length, then took the last 3 inches of the entire thing off when it exited. Was a bad chrony year. Glad I buy the cheapest one on the market.

it will detect the other shooters shots.

This is why we use a recoil activated trigger on the lab radar.

The magneto speed has its own shortcomings.
It changes barrel harmonics so you cannot use it during ammo testing because the harmonics will change when you remove it.
