How many of you are willing to confess that when you purchased your home/property..

Shooting and neighbors were not a consideration when buying house on postage-stamp-sized lot. Shootings in NEIGHBORHOOD were a consideration when looking to move out of Dallas 20+ years ago.

I hear ya Greybeard. We lived in south dallas for a year and pleasant grove for two, and when I was single I lived in fair park for a while.

I bought a piece of land in which my house now stands...it is just waiting for funds so I can create my own range!!!

That is why I chose to build, not buy already built. Also, I don´t have a gun safe, but I have my own trophy and gun room....:neener:

That's one reason that I left the city.

Here are some others in a random order:

1) I didn't take advantage of going to the events that the city offered, arts, music, museums, sporting events, etc. I'm still close enough that I can do a day trip into the city.

2) the price of property is so outrageous that I'd never be able to see my family because I'd have to work too many hours to afford a 'palace'

3) by the time I could find a house that I could afford, my commute would be so long and aggravating that I'd rarely see my family or I'd be in such a fit of frustration that they wouldn't want to see me

4) the politics in the urban area were horrible

5) too many nosey neighbors. Pack up the car for vacation and three of them swarm around, "are you selling the house? are you moving?"

6) the country is closer to the things I enjoy, family, friends, fishing, hiking, hunting, shooting club.

7) shorter commute, even able to see my wife at lunch time from time to time.

8) affordable housing with a good sized piece of land that I can garden, hunt on, play with the kids on (when we have kids).

9) lower crime rate in the rural areas.

10) safer schools

That is going to be one of the primary considerations when I start looking. I have a friend that has a small range out behind his garage and it is great.

As a side note it's not limited to us shooters either. I have a friend who is into hot rods. When they were shopping for their current home the real estate lady asked them what they were looking for. He told her a 5,000 square foot garage with an attached house.:D

His wife is still :fire:

Garrett,
I used to work with someone into hot rods too that did the same thing. His wife didn't care though. He built a 40'x60' 'toy box' in his yard for his hotrod and shop etc.

Hey, if that's your game, great!! go for it!! Isn't America great!

Currently ....

I live in Long Beach, PDSR California. Illegal to buy or shoot a BB gun.

I will retire in the next five to ten years (probably shorter) and possibly moving out of state in three. When I move, where I can shoot will be a high priority. When I retire, the bride and I plan on being "out of town". A personal range will be a major concern.

I foresee some acres of real property and a defensible location being part of my search criteria. Design of house and curtledge will include reloading and workshops, perhaps on a Roman villa plan, or enclosed area, like a Mexican colonial era hacienda. Also planning on my own well and windmill for power generation. Phone and computer hookup will be wireless in some fashion.

So, in answer to the question not asked, my next purchase will definately have those considerations. I'm planning on being part of the Burt Gummer society.

By the way, this is not a confession. I'm bragging!!!

When me and my wife can finally buy a house the ability to do whatever we want on the land without getting hassled will be a big consideration. I'm looking for a place with a quarry. :) I'd prefer Alaska but I might have to settle for Nothern Arizona.

That's my biggest concern right now. At the least, I want to shoot skeet at my house.

Cheatham County, TN, here I come. (Eventually...)

Being able to shoot on our property.......

was a MAJOR concerned when we purchased our 50 acre retirement farm in western Oregon. Have a 300 yard range and a small hill for a backstop. Just perfect! Oh, by the way - we do some farming too. Good shooting;)

When I bought my property 10 years ago I enjoyed hunting as does my son and that was a major consideration in the decision to purchase. It's only been in the last couple of years that I have taken an interest in shooting handguns. It does not take a lot of land to enjoy shooting so get out there and have fun

A gunroom in the basement was the prime consideration when buying the house I live in now. A large dry corner with now windows sold it. Because Interstate 57 is too close to the safety fan of the place for a range on the new property...I kept the old property, so I'd still have my range.

My wife and I are considering moving in a few months. I've already told her that I want to live someplace where I can walk out my back door and shoot my guns without getting into trouble.

Absolutely. We're looking to buy a place or find some land this year, probably south of DFW. Over the last couple of years we've looked at several places north of DFW, but suburban sprawl seems to be heading north faster than south. Prices are measurably higher that direction as welll. Since I work in downtown Dallas I could care less about the commute time or direction since it's equally bad.

My primary consideration is at least an 800 meter clear f-o-f in all directions from the house. My family has the 'old farm' a couple of hours east of here where I have my 800 meter range, but I never seem to get there as much lately.

Even when we were looking to the north, there was always the underlying precept that there needed to be enough land to have both a big metal framed shop/storage building for all our other fun things as well as room for a 3 sided bermed shooting pit. Plenty of clear sky is a must, too as we plan to generate at least part of our electricity by solar or wind as well.

Regards,
Rabbit.

One hundred feet from the porch in one direction are steel spinners and a pallet to hold paper targets. One hundred something yards in the other direction is the gong. The 100 foot range is floodlit and though I do not shoot at night, I could. Did that figure in my purchase? Does the bear? Is the Pope?

I got a workshop and shooting range for my wife, which was a really great trade.

I just wanted to be "way out in the country" for all the usual reasons that a city-hater has. Gotta say it's nice to have a benchrest on the front porch.

No confession required. I freely admit I looked around the lots of the contenders to be sure a range could be set up before buying. After about 5 months, our search came down to two houses in about the same area of the county. This one had a room in the basement that I had designated as my gun/reloading room with my wifes blessing, so here we are. This place also had some other features that helped sway our decision.

Amen!

When I moved out here, I got serious with the Hornet, and developed really accurate loads. My benchrest isn't on the porch, but from the porch, I can see clear to the creek and beyond, and have killed many a crow by lying prone on the porch and resting my left hand on the bottom railing and resting my Kimber 82 on my hand -- I get hits out to about 200 yards, or as far as I can see.

Well, I can't shoot firearms in the city I live in. the next town either direction has some good hunting spots and there are 34 clubs within a 20 min drive.
Besides, the land on which my house is on was given as a gift and is part of the land that I grew up on. The family connection (I'm 3rd gen to live on it) to the land was far more important than the gun useage on it. Tucked into the woods and I can barely see my neighbors. Besides, when land that goes for $40-80 per acre is free...

I live inside the beltway, it ain't even an issue. I have neighbor who gets upset when I dust the squirrels off the bird feeder with my airsoft Sig. OTOH, we did just buy 12 acres outside of Santa Fe, so meybe they's hope yet . . . :D

Live on top of a hill & own the land below it; I can shoot off the back deck only at about a 45 degree down angle, or go out back and shoot into the hillside below the house. Definitely wanted that hillside when we bought the place.

First off i have to say that currently i have what i consider to be a near perfect situation shooting range -wise, "as is". the only thing that could make the situation truly "perfect" is if the range that i currently use was within walking distance rather than a 10 minute or less drive.

Now, When my wife and I go ahead and move from our current location, which we plan to do for reasons that have nothing to do with acess to anyhting to do with the shooting sports, i fully intend to make sure that wherever we wind up either has easy ascess to, or better yet an area in/on which to built a range of AT LEAST 100yrds and preferably 600yards depth.

now as to what i suspect will happen.... regardless of what might happen in 10 years time, we will most likely move from our current "too small for three" (it was perfect for my wife and step-daughter, untill I moved in) house, and get a home more suited to our current needs, but still within Brazoria county and therefore within easy access range of my current gun club.

our current "unchangable criteria" for a house are as follows

Bigger than the current house, ie 1,800sqft or more preferably 2,000

larger kitchen and living/dining areas

closets that are better thought out than the scheme used in our current place (last owner remodled and how he/she/they handled various things is insane, the kitchen suffers from this as well)

at least two bedrooms other than the Master bedroom

other than that... perferably (ie dream of dreams, we'd love to have these items) having the following attributes,

"Master suite" (ie there is a full bathroom off the bedroom),

the pre-existence or easy potential for rooms in which to have the following things....

a place my wife to persue her quilting hobby

a gun/hobby room for me with room and accomadation for at least one large safe, a proper workbench, a seperate reloading bench/area, and all the various items, and storage i'd need to persue my other less bulky hobbies.

a "mother-in-law suite" style setup for my step-daughter, (we have our reasons for this but i do not feel that they are needed here)

and a place, possibly in either of the hobby rooms, for a dartboard and possibly a pool table.

and i personally would really LOVE for all this to be on a plot of land that as stated above allows me to persue just about any shooting activity that i might choose, even possibly that of having a 100yard target "right outside the window" of the above mentioned gun/reloading/hobby room
