How many of you have been delayed?

I'm in the Granola State of California. I can legally buy one handgun every thirty days only. There is also a ten day waiting period whether you buy a handgun or a long gun.

I get a 30 minute delay every time. Several years ago the NRA printed some ads in their rag about some bad people, turns out I have the exct same name of a double murderer. Now my wife buys the guns!

I used to get delayed every time when the instant check was Federal. Now Oregon has their own instant check system and I've had no problems. Of course the OSP charges $10 each time.:(

Years ago a delay cost me, because of a jerk at a gun shop. I was in a shop about an hour away and overheard the son of the owner trying his best to sell an old 10/22 to a customer, knocking the price down to $85. The guy left without buying it, so I asked if he would sell it to me for that price.
He agreed, I started the paperwork, he says "Oh, you'll need a magazine with it" and starts taking a new mag out of it's package off the wall. I told him I had a couple mags already from my old 10/22 that got stolen, so he agreed to keep the mag and knock another $10 off.

I was delayed but was going to pay for it anyway and pick it up later. He said just pay for it when I pick it up and stupidly I agreed.

I called a couple days later and asked the owner if it was OK to come pick it up yet. He say "sure, no problem. This was the one you did some trading on, right?"
I say "no, just a cash deal."
"No, that can't be. We can't sell it that cheap, that's below our cost"
"Sorry, I don't know about that, but it's the deal your son made."
He didn't say much more but when I got there he says my paperwork was lost and if I wanted the rifle I would have to fill out a new 4473 and pay his price.
Not a good way to do business.

About the same for me. I've got a pretty common name, so I'm sure there is a list of folks as long as my arm on the wrong side of things. I'd consider 30 minutes to be quick. I once waited a couple hours, then had to go to work, so I just came back the next day.

My wife on the other hand takes about ten minutes. Guess who buys the guns.

Only time I ever filled out a 4473 was a Saturday morning at about 9:20 AM. The dealer phoned in right in front of me and it was instant in the true sense of the word. As soon as he got done giving the info he said thank you and hung up. I told him that it was faster than I expected, he replied that they generally go quick as long as you get someone who speaks english as a first language. :what:

Interesting story, this shop supposedly opens at 9:00, the owner showed up at 9:15 to find me in his parking lot waiting on him to open up the place and my pocket on fire. I walked out no later than 9:25 with a WASR-10 and 500 rounds of overpriced wolf ammo. I commented to him as I left that he had made a pretty good start on the day. He agreed but opined that I had probably jinxed him for the rest of the weekend. :D

Even when I purchase a pistol and have my carry permit, I still have a 2 day wait.

wow. even with the carry permit? I thought you were able to bypass NICS as long as you showed your CCW license. In this situation I thought the green card wouldn't matter?

Got delayed once...

I got delayed about 10 min recently when I purchased my first pistol. I'm not exactly sure what the problem was but I included by SSN and had used the abbreviation for my state of residence.

I had to cross out my state of residence, initial it and write out the state name in full.

When I've fill out 4473's for my shotgun and rifle in the past, the check was under a minute. That store I believe told me to write out the state name in full.

I'm in CA. one gun every 30 days. Once I got a little anxious and had to re DROS. Another 10 day wait. I won't make that mistake again.

I get delayed every time. It can range from a few minutes to several days.

Its REALLY annoying when the gun shop doesnt call you to let you know you can come pick it up. I've had several shops not call, so I either have to call or stop by to see whats up. I've found a couple of good shops that are very prompt in calling you when they get the "proceed".

Never out of 5 firearm purchases. I've always put my S.S. (didn't know it was optional) on the 4473 and guess that made the difference. I'm geeked to go and purchase a firearm now having my CHL.

Cmon paycheck!!!!!!!

Never had a problem and I always list my SS# on the form. Since the NICs check started, every dealer I have dealt with said "put your SS# on the form" or you will probably be delayed. So I do....

If somebody really wants to find out what your SS# is, it can be done. I don't make it easy as I shred all financial documents before trashing them, but it can be done.

Hmm. I just got delayed also. I didnt put my SS down on the form. Lame.

Here in Oregon I get delayed every time I buy a gun for at least ten or fifteen minutes while the store person stands around with the phone in his ear waiting for an answer from the state police. Having a CCW makes no difference here.

I get delayed about half of the time. Once got denied and had to appeal before getting approval. That name check criteria was designed to deny as many people as possible. I think that if you get an anti, or a really lazy person doing the check, they won't go past the name check to the SSN.

Edit to add: I have CCW from 2 states too.

I've been delayed either two or three times.

I started putting my SSN on the forms and haven't had problems since.

My name is very common and is even on the dreaded "watch list." NOT ME, JUST MY NAME!!! I get delayed at the airport every freakin' time regardless of the information that I give them, but I give the ATF my SSN and it goes through exery time. I wish that the airport was that efficient!

I've never provided my SSN and have never been delayed (except for the system being "down").

I have a fairly common name too - there is (or was? - not sure about the last election) a member of the US House of Representatives with my first and last name. (he is probably even a very distant relative)

I've been delayed many times. It seems to be happening more and more lately, and not just to me. I do wonder if they've altered their software to create a de facto waiting period. You never get to know the reason for the delay, and cannot appeal a delay.

I also get delayed every time. I usually just end up waiting the three days. You can apply for a UPIN number (Voluntary Appeal File application) that allows the NICS system to keep your information for more than the 24 hours it is allowed. I am told this will eliminate erroneous delays. You can just call 1-877-324-6427 and tell them you want an application for a UPIN. Mine arrived in a few days. You have to get fingerprinted and sign a waiver allowing NICS to maintain a file containing various information. I am yet to decide if the three day wait is worth the loss of privacy (although you can notify the NICS people and ask that your file be destroyed at any time).

My wife and I both have been "delayed"/"temperary hold" placed on our purchase. Both times it was on the weekend, Saturday I believe. With pistol permits in CT you can walk in, buy and leave. They call the state or use the computerized system to check with the state to get an authorization number to complete the sale. Well, it turns out since my wife and I were born out side of the state of CT, the system kicks back a "temp hold" code. Bottom line is we had to drive back ( ~30miles) to the shop to pick it up during the week. The guy behind the counter made the comment that I was on hold. Annoying and I wish I could take the gas/mileage off my state tax :cuss:
