I enjoy firearms and consider them to be tools as well as a hobby. Amongst my collection is a Glock 19, AR-15 carbine, .22lr rifle, 12ga shotgun, and a 16 gauge shotgun. I'm in the habit of buying a box of ammo any time I run to Walmart and currently have around 500 9mm, 300 5.56/.223, 250 12ga and 250 16ga. I'd like to have around 1,000 5.56 and 1,000 12ga and was wondering how much ammo you guys keep on hand?

I enjoy reloading about as much as shooting. I'd guess I have 10k loaded and components for another 10k.

Man that's awesome, I'm jealous! My interest in reloading has been growing lately, it's just expensive to get into. Maybe I'll bite the bullet and invest in it now that I have an AR and will be shooting more. Nice supply my friend!

50k? Holy smokes, yeah my poll may be a little embarrassing now. Keep in mind it asks how many rounds per caliber (weapon)...but still. That's incredible.:what:

I think the questions are not well structured. You only give one choice that fits all. For my primary weapons the AK and 9 mm glock I keep larger quantities of ammo. for seldom used .45 or .44 revolver or 8 mm mauser or .38spl only a couple hundred at most.

I struggled with how to word it, for those exact reasons. Perhaps "How many rounds do you keep on hand for your primary defensive weapons?" would have been more appropriate.

I'm not stockpiling for any shtf scenarios, but I don't want to get caught short. I reload and do all my "casual" shooting with handhold's but I keep somewhere between 1-2k factory stuff on the shelf for 12ga, 5.56, .45acp and 9mm. About 12k .22lr (several years ago I got in the habit of buying a couple of bricks every time I went into wallyworld. It added up faster than I realized.) As for .45lc, .44spl, .44mag, .38spl, .357mag, .380, and .308 I have a couple of hundred on the shelf. And I have lots and lots of lead bullets and primers and powder.

I won't embarrass myself and tell you about the 7.62x54R. It was cheap and those spam cans are addictive

I feel like a piker. My wife and I agreed that I should keep at least 100 rounds for each centerfire including shotguns, and a minimum of two unopened bricks of .22.

I'm NOT stockpiling for Doomsday but if it comes, I'll bet 100+ rounds of 8mm Mauser will enable me to get a better weapon and probably ammo, too.

Besides, I have a 30-30, the ORIGINAL assault weapon.

I don't understand the need for thousands of rounds of ammo. I have no objections to it just don't understand. I'm a Nam era combat veteran and expect to be very dead before I expend a thousand rounds in a confrontational situation. Who or what are you going to use that many rounds on and survive? How are you going to transport them and to where? Sorry but the logistics just don't add up. Just my 2 cents not intending to offend anyone. Frank

I think most that buy factory ammo in large quantities do it because of price, as it is cheaper to buy in bulk.

Reloaders do it as a second hobby, that also saves money.

I don't think most are hoarding thousands of rounds for imaginary scenarios, but if it happens...

I used to have 10,000 plus rounds of various rifle and pistol calibers. Then realized that the ammo is no fun unless I shoot it. Still have several thousand rounds of x39 and couple hundred rounds of buckshot left.

+1, why I shoot it now.

That ammo shortage had people hustling for range ammo. Main reason I keep so much on hand and when I buy I usually buy a case.

I guess my selection of 100-500 was about right. I keep 392 .223 (14 loaded magazines), 175 6.8 (7 loaded Magazines, still working on getting to 14), 250 12 Ga, .40, 9mm, about 100 ea. .308, 7.62x54, .380. and 2 bricks of .22 around at all times. Have at least enough components lying around to load that many more and 5k ea LR, SR, and SP primers.

At times I get way more built up, then take a break from reloading and just shoot for a few weekends, but I always try to maintain those numbers. If something drastic happens, I really doubt Ill live long enough to use anywhere near all of it.

Yeah, reloading is worth it if you shoot much. The push that got me over the edge was when I realized that all of my reloading supplies would ultimately be free, given the money I'd save versus buying factory ammo.

Anyway, I answered your question with "1,000+" as my category, but in fairness I don't stock that much ammo for some of my guns (12 gauge would be measured in the low hundreds, for example).

I have about 6,000 22 rnds and usually keep 100-200 rnds for each of my hunting rifles and about 500 rnd for my pistols about 10 boxes of shotgun slugs and usually 100 of so rounds of bird shot.

1k+ in each caliber for all my centerfire pistols and rifles. Over 1k for shotgun if I add up all the different shot sizes. And over 8k for .22lr. It doesn't take long to amass a lot of .22 when your purchase 1k at a time. I stockpiled my centerfire ammo so when I start reloading I have a lot of brass on hand for good amount of time.

Probably got 10K of various calibers. Mostly 9, 5.56 and 7.62. Just sort of accumulated it. if I see a good deal on one of the boards I usually buy. it doesn't spoil. LOL.

When "Uncle Sam" calls YOU to re-stock HIM.....

you MIGHT have A BIT TOO MUCH ON HAND.....

I keep about 1K of each major caliber I shoot. .22 Rimfire is a completely different thing..last time I looked, about 10K .22LR, 2K .22Mag

I keep as much as I can afford, which isn't nearly enough.

At the moment, I have about 300 9mm, with supplies for another 500. Only about 200 7.62x39, and 500 or so of x54r. Only about 100 .357, but 250 or so .38 Special--I shot it a lot recently. Supplies for more.

.22, as other have said, is a different animal. I have a .50 military can holding about 5000, and I still buy another box every other time I'm around Wal-Mart or Dick's. The latter has the good stuff.

I only have 40 rounds of one caliber, but that's 6.5 Carcano. Tough to find affordable stuff.

I was just looking and I have 2 40MM ammo cans of .22 alone. Guess I went a little overboard when I decided to keep a few extra around.:D If I want to keep 200 rounds for each firearm I would need to build on to the house. Anyway I am not your average firearm owner and still do try to keep enough around to go shooting anytime I want without running out.

Barter. Some invest in gold and silver, I go for brass and lead. It's cheaper to accumalate and has more practicle uses. I'll stop there.
