Guns made of meteorite: Price tag $1 million

By Allison Barrie Published January 14, 2016

In the market for a gun that is out of this world? Then the Big Bang pistol may just be for you … provided you’ve got very, very deep pockets.
Parts of the 4.5 billion-year-old Gibeon meteorite that landed in sub-Saharan Africa in prehistoric times have been transformed into guns and pistol grips by Cabot Guns.

Cabot will reveal its meteorite-enhanced guns for the first time next week at the SHOT Show in Las Vegas. The Big Bang pistol set will ultimately be shown to the public in May. A relatively new company at about five years old, Cabot Guns has been establishing a reputation for luxury weapons. Its focus is on crafting 1911-style pistols.

Supplies?

Do you mean the material, the Gibeon fragments? You can get raw Gibeon meteorite for roughly $500 per lb. I'm guessing they bought the 77 lbs. of Gibeon at a much lower rate however.

It's not necessarily the raw material costs that make an item valuable. For example, a groom's wedding ring made with Gibeon meteorite will weigh just a few grams, but retails for much more than a whole pound of the raw.

I was going to ask if Gibeon even makes for a good gun material, but then I realized it's Cabot, so I assume just the grips? Much like their Mammoth molar grips, I suspect this will look gawdy and silly against the clean lines of their 1911. A Korth revovler made of hand-forged Damascus steel; that's impressive. Shaping two rectangular panels of whatever is the most expensive material large enough to be used and pairing with a bad pun is boring. Might as well make solid Rhenium grips since it'd probably cost more in material.

Whatever, if it makes some Saudi Prince happy, more power to him...

Couple-a things I took from the news item.

Boy, I sure wish Fox would use "weapon" and "gun" a bit less and use firearm/pistol more.

I wonder what form of proof there is that this is actually made from meteorite.

If it is surely made from that meteorite and I were some yacht sailin', multiple Ferrari ownin' mogul... I think I'd like to have one.

It's not "1 million dollars in materials", not any more than a Picasso is "5-million in paint, canvas and other materials". The maker decided that was a reasonable price, just as I could pick up a stick of wood outside and judge that it was worth a million dollars as a Harry Potter style wand.
