I hope the ammo shows up on gun broker!:D

It also had to take some time...dats a lot of guns and ammo. Sounds like an inside job...and they'll probably end up going to a bunch of terrorists.

.....wow. Last figures I heard was the government gets their M16s from FN-H for ~$800 a pop. That right there is the theft of ~$16 million dollars of US government property bought with our tax dollars.

don't think the US gives the M-16 rifles to Kuwait. I believe Kuwait purchased them. So we earn a profit by selling them replacements.

20,000 M16s stolen from Kuwaiti miltary arsenals.
Will probably end up in Syria where the need is great.
Avoids those pesky "end user certificates" to document disposition of military arms.

Back around 1955-1958, I saw a lot of DEWAT machineguns advertised as "the perfect father's day gift" in Veteran's magazines and men's adventure magazines. Machineguns were imported into the US as military surplus, barrels welded shut and welded to the receiver (at least the samples shown to the Treasury Department ;)) to remove them from records keeping including the NFA. Some of the importers were with the CIA (as were some of the small firms making M1 carbines from surplus parts in the same era). While a lot of DEWATs were sold as collectors' items, a lot of live military guns--no longer controlled according to international conventions--were transhipped to CIA clients. It blew up in the CIA's face when guns last known to have been shipped to a US importer for DEWATting turned up live in the wrong hands.

Nowadays, the guns intended for deniable clients just get reported stolen. BTW which side of the Syria mess does Kuwait support?

BTW. As I recall, it was an editor at the Saturday Evening Post who publicly blew the whistle. The Treasury did allow an amnesty for NFA registration of DEWATs by legit collectors. (And DEWATs properly registered could be reactivated by registered owners, since they were registered as machineguns). At that time what became ATF was "Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Division" ATTD in the Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and what NFA paperwork I have seen from that era was on IRS letterhead.

Wikipedia on FSA arms:
"Gun smuggling business is booming thanks to Syrian uprising"

Raids on government checkpoints and arms depots are carried out to supply the FSA with much of its ammunition and new arms. The FSA also purchases weapons on the Syrian black market which is supplied by arms smugglers from neighboring countries and corrupt loyalist forces selling government arms. There have been reports that whole arms depots have been offered for sale, although these offers were refused because of fears of a potential trap.[76][77]

If they ever be sold to Syrian rebels, then they have must have had received new shipments of 5.56 ammo , too. US has openly declared aid to Syrian rebels a month ago. This seals the deal.
