I am planning on going on my first hunt in the spring (for javelina) and I am wondering what to expect for a taxidermist to charge for doing the head only. Any ideas?
I was just researching this exact topic today (planning another javelina hunt in a few weks). I am not sure in your area, but I found a taxidermist in Austin that charges $400.00 for a javelina shoulder mount. Kind of suprised me because the only charge $380.00 for a Whitetail Buck and $600.00 for a full body javelina mount.
If money's tight and/or you're not dead set on a mount with the hide, do a search for "european mounts." I did one to a whitetail skull last year, turned out pretty well, only took a few hours, looks pretty cool on the wall.
If you haven't been to JavelinaHunter.com it is an excellent site for javelina hunting. Everything from calling to cooking to doing your own European Skull Mounts.
I am reading it as I sit here, what a great site! I am not sure about using the call though. Seems kinda gutsy to tick off a bunch of javelina and then shoot at them. I suppose if you could not get close enough you would have little choice.
It's easy to barbecue a ham. The main thing is to not let the meat dry out. I start with a very high heat for a few minutes, turning and basting very frequently. No salt in the basting mix; use tongs instead of a fork.
After the initial crust is formed, get the heat down to about the same as a 300-degree overn. Turn and baste every ten or fifteen minutes. Total time is around 1.5 to 2 hours.
