A friend of mine says he has a circa 1940 German Luger 9mm, not sure which factory, along with 2 extra mags, original holster, have not seen it in person but he says it's almost mint. Even has some circa 1940 ammo for it. What is something like that worth? Or would more info/pics be needed?

I don't really know much about lugers, just that they are very popular with collectors and it's not uncommon to see them for a couple thousand bucks.

If it's dated 1940, it's a Mauser made Luger.

There is absolutely NO WAY to give even a ball park estimate of the value without sharp CLEAR pictures of the pistol from every conceivable angle and close-ups of every marking on it, the mags and the holster. Every detail of the pistol will effect it's final value. The value can vary by many hundreds of dollars depending on the details.

Posting them over on the Luger Forum will get the most accurate estimates.

I would go even farther to say that a hands on inspection by a knowledgeable collector of Lugers is the only way to get a prospective fair market value.

Like doubs45 said, value can vary wildly according to obscure markings and originality. These things can not be adequately evaluated through photographs only.

The best bet is to research research research. Check out the Luger Forum

I bought an S/37 with 60% blue, all-matching and excellent bore and overall condition some years back for around $800. That same pistol is up around $1500 or more now, mostly more. Non-Russian captures are becoming hard to find, and priced accordingly. It's hard to go wrong investing in them if you do it intelligently. Don't let the thrill of the hunt and awe of the proof marks get to you... ;)
