I am getting into IPSC and am wondering how many rounds I should keep on hands at all times. When I shot bullseye I always kept about 500 38 match loads on hand. And the other question is how much ammo is to much.

Cue 3 dozen response ignoring the IPSC part and saying "There's never too much" with about half of those describing their stash followed by a handful of people saying "Wow, how do you afford all that?" Perhaps a generous mod would move this to the competition forum so you don't get a list of how much ammo for their Mosin-Nagant the freedom fighters of the board have. :)

How much do you want to keep on hand? Do you want to load before each match? It doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

One more box than you think you need.

We ran short of 9mm at our first match yesterday because we guessed wrong about how much to bring and had to buy a box off someone who had a spare.

You have too much when your range bag/box is too heavy to carry. ;) :D LOL

If you are shooting 38 supper, which you can't just pick up anywhere I would say more than that. Then again I don't shoot IPSC so I don't know how many rounds you go threw in a match. I'd get some more.

But I'll stick with more than most, less than some.

If this is handloaded stuff I'd figure the most you've ever used in a match, and then go 2-3 times that much. You probably don't want to have to load before every match, but I wouldn't want to get so far ahead that if I found a better load, I'd be stuck with tons of the old stuff.

I don't shoot IPSC, but IDPA. I keep around 1000 rounds of 9mm and .40, and replenish when I get down to 500 rounds of either.

i dont compete at all and i have over 100k rounds in a wide variety of different calibers... but im just weird like that...
