How much silver does a silver bullet need?

Good question. I don't believe that SAAMI covers it, being as they have no standards on werewolves.

I have always just rubbed the bullet on my were/zombie/vamp bullets against an old silver dollar.

I don't think it takes much.

if you are going by the pop culture, movies vampires. then in blade 3 the atomized silver was enough to cause the vampires pain. i imagine some silver into a hollow point would be plenty.

Do Winchester Silvertips actually contain silver? I thought they were actually copper jacketed with nickel plating?

How about Laser-Cast from Oregon Trail? According to their description:

Laser-Cast bullets feature an alloy made from silver and 7 other elements to produce a bullet of unprecedented consistency and precision. This silver bearing alloy along with low-smoke lube yields ultra-high velocities and extreme accuracy without leading even at jacketed bullet speeds.

They don't say how much silver is in the mix, but why bother adding it if it won't take out a werewolf?

I use them to reload my .38 Special and .45 ACP cartridges. Consistent and accurate.

Sincerely,

Prof. A. Wickwire

I reluctantly handed her gun back. She reinserted the magazine, chambered a round, and then took the mag out to top it off with the extracted round she still had in her hand. She paused for a second and then tossed it to me. Reflexively I snatched it out of the air.

Examining the cartridge, I noticed that it was a very strange design. The case was normal brass, but the bullet itself was different. It was shaped like an ordinary .45 bullet, except that it was actually what appeared to be a standard jacketed hollowpoint, with a shiny hard metallic ball filling the cavity. The two pieces appeared to be sealed together into a solid projectile.

“What is this?

“Contrary to the Lone Ranger, silver bullets really suck compared to good old fashioned lead for most uses. Silver is too hard, and it doesn’t fully engage the rifling. It is lighter than lead, so you get really lightweight projectiles with lousy accuracy. It is pretty useless except for one little thing: it is the only thing that will kill some of the stuff we face.”

“Why is that, anyway?” I asked.

“Nobody knows for sure, but we have some theories. Most popular is it is a violent reaction of evil creatures to the 30 pieces of silver that Judas was paid. The Vatican’s Hunter team says that it is because silver is a pure metal that represents goodness, while lead is a base metal of the earth. You get other weird ideas from Wiccans and mystics, but even science is stumped why silver works so much better on bona fide evil creatures. All we know is that it does. Lycanthropes can’t regenerate from it, and even vampires feel pain from silver.”

“Looks like a Corbon Pow’r Ball.”

“Good call. That’s who we stole the idea from. The ball in front is pure silver. It penetrates well, and as the silver is forced back it expands the traditional lead slug around it. Usually the silver fragments off after a few inches and leaves a separate wound cavity. Best of both worlds. Still works like a regular bullet, shoots like a regular bullet, but enough silver to do a number on evil. For the longest time before we came up with this we used a milled piece of silver encased in lead that was shaped like a semi wad-cutter. It worked, but not nearly as good as this. We have them made for us specifically. They cost a fortune, so we only make them in .45 for pistols and subguns, and .308 for rifles. When we need lots of silver up close and fast, we use a modified silver double-aught buckshot.”

“Now you’re talking my language.” I held up the bullet. “So I guess that is what the Feds were going to shoot me with if I had been infected.”

“Nope, they use a sintered metal. Silver powder encased in a polymer matrix. Neat stuff, but only viable if you have a tax payer funded budget. The company that makes it only sells to government agencies.” She caught the bullet when I tossed it back. She loaded it back in the magazine, inserted that back into her 1911 and reholstered without looking.

“You really know your stuff.”

“Thanks. I love my job ...

I just get unjacketed lead bullets and carve a cross into the tip. Then I bless them and have them consecrated by a Orthodox priest. After that I coat them with ionic medical silver and salt them with garlic powder then let them marinate over night. That usually takes care off anything supernatural.

Kee-Ripes! You all subscribe to the "Bring enough gun" school of thought but now you're going get cheap when it comes to werewolves?!?! :fire: :banghead:

Tell ya what, file the front sights off them weapons... 'cause when a warewolf takes that rifle from you and sticks...

Silver bullets

I can remember a test of silver bullets ala the Lone Ranger in one of the rags years ago. The silver was a real dog to cast in a bullet mold. (Much higher melting point than lead.) It was too hard. Accuracy was lousy.

Waiting for Oleg Volk to finish the cover, then off to the printers.

Corriea, you are just the sort of person to wave a bag of crack in front of a junky.

Or just one of those Tromix conversions in front of any member of this board.

Either way, doing that to us is just plain torture. :D

Good question. I don't believe that SAAMI covers it, being as they have no standards on werewolves.

How can they NOT have a werewolf standard? It seems logical since all their other standards seem to be based on zombies. ;)

Rather than the Pow'r Ball, though, I could see a Hydra-Shok bullet, but with a silver post in the center...

Put me down for an early release copy!

That's just cruel, Correia... what's the price for a pre-release e-copy? I'll sign whatever Non-Disclosure Agreement you write up.

I wish Hollywood had some writers like you... Silver loaded Pow'r'ball makes a lot more sense than that liquid crap they had in Underworld (otherwise a decent flick). :D

I'm not doing a pre-release or anything like that. But when it is available for sale, believe me, I'll spam it all over the intertubes, and I'll bug everybody who liked it to harrass their local bookstore about why they need to keep it in stock. :)

A typical ballistics discussion on a Werewolf/Vampire hunters forum might be something like:

45vampoff: The .45 ACP is the best because it puts the most silver into the target. I've seen bloosuckers flipped backward hit in the thumb by one of these babies.

Woofshooter9: There's no ballistic difference between 9mm and .45. The 9mm expands better and provides more silver bullet surface area inside the creature's body to interact with his blood.

10mmKillzEvil: All you guys are full of it. Vamps and wolfmen flee in terror at the sight of my 10mm even with regular bullets.

BeastSlayer01: Do I need to worry about a KB if I shoot silver through my Glock .40?

hunter9130: guys your over looking the most obvious. the 1911 alone. as we all know deamons can be killed by an instrument of god. JMB's 1911 is a gift from god. again, the 1911 wins

JMB's 1911 is a gift from god. again, the 1911 wins
I'm sorry to all, but this just seems to fit after that statement. :p

Would silver-based bullets work in a Glock? I mean, isn't there some admonition against even lead in those, IIRC? Or am I thinking of the wrong design?
