I also voted 75% or more. I always carry when I leave the house. I don't always carry in the house with the doors locked. I keep my pocket gun in my nightstand while asleep.
I carry when I feel there is a better than 25% chance I may have to defend myself.
I don't mean to pick on you
22-rimfire - but I've never understood how anyone is able to "feel" what their odds are in any given situation.
I've been threatened by an erratic driver while walking my dog in my own quiet residential neighborhood.
I've had very sketchy looking "meat salesmen" come up my driveway and ask questions about my dog (who was going nuts at the time).
I've been threatened while walking with my dog and wife and grandson in an upscale area park.
At that same dog park, a calm, well-mannered pit bull stopped to check out my grandson. I exchanged glances with its owner and we walked on. An hour after we got home, a man with a pit bull fitting both their descriptions was arrested at the park. The guy was guilty of several horrific and senseless murders.
Come to think of it - my dog seems to be the common denominator here!
The point is: Just prior to each of these incidents, I would not have assessed my chances of needing to defend myself as more than 25%. And in fact, I did not need to present my firearm in any of those incidents. However, I'm convinced that in one of those instances, having a firearm allowed me to make it clear to the potential assailant that he needed to end his aggressive rush at me and step back.
When bad stuff happens, it almost always happens quickly, with little warning, and completely unexpected.
