I have an 870 Wingmaster 20 guage (Mod) in my safe that i collected a decade ago. My brother-in-law wants it and I am not sure whether to let it go or not. I prefer old guns as opposed to buying new but from a collectors standpoint, is this one worth hanging on to? The serial is 367XXX(X), there is an X at the end of the serial #. About how old is the gun and what is it likely worth? I am no dealer or expert but it looks like the gun just came out of the box. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

For the age, call Remington customer service. That's the only way. I looked on-line when I bought one and there is no database of serial numbers except at Remington.

That is a standard weight 20 built on the 12 gauge sized receiver. The 1100s are in some demand by the target shooters, but i am not aware of any large following for the Wingmaster version, in fact I would suspect it would bring less than an LW version. It should recoil less, but it is also heavier. Nothing wrong with it.

The fellow at Remington was very nice and helpful. My 870 was made in 1954 and will be staying in my safe. It really is a fine example of the 870 model and I am extremely pleased with the information. Incidentally i had him check the age on two other remingtons i have, a 760 Gamemaster in 30-06 and a Model 8 in 30-Remington. The 760 was a 1955 model in almost as nice condition as the 870. The Model 8 was from 1928 and for its age is in good shape. I would not be afraid to take it to the field for a day of deer hunting! Thank you guys for the advice, I found out some great information that will keep these old Remingtons in my collection until they carry me home. Merry Christmas all.

1954? Nice. Wasn't that the first year of the 870? (EDIT: I looked it up and found that it was 1951)

You should post pics, by the way.

I called Remingtong on my Model 11 and found out it was made in 1914. Very cool and they were very helpful.

Apropos of nothing, they say my 5 digit 1100 doesn't exist. They wanted me to send it to them to verify it - a picture was not sufficient. Only time I have ever gotten a bit ticked with Remington. After that, I didn't have the heart to tell them about the 4 digit model I once had. They phone in info bunch are not infallible.

Here are some pics you might enjoy. If i get this upload thing right. I threw in pics of the REM model 8 and REM 760 along with another little prize I have collected my 1940 first series Colt Woodsman. Enjoy! IMG_4521.jpg

Very nice gun. In this particular area I know that the older smooth topped barrels with no vent-rib are particularly prized as shooters. Most of the locals just don't like the vent-rib and most will shoot 2.75" shells instead of 3" just to avoid the ribs.

Congrats!
