I learned that same thing decades ('60s) ago when my father was interviewed by the TeeVee news. They took out his best argument and used his weakest. He said after that he'd never speak to the media again.
The media is motivated to create as much emotional, controversy as possible to generate ratings, and dollars. People watch this crap about these crazy losers that want fame. The media will not stop reporting, and sensationalizing these guys, all for money.
The downside to not disclosing the information is then all of the calls about cover-ups, either by the government with an agenda or the media with an agenda, and all the problems that go with that.
