How to open my ammo spam can

I recently purchased 1080 rounds of 5.45 x 39.5, came in a sealed spam can and today I got the can opener for it. How do I get it open?

Is it a key opener (slot in key)? If so, look for a tab-like metal strip about an inch down from the top on the side. It may be rusted off depending on the condition of the container.

If that doesn't work, you may need an old-fashioned can-opener that has a knife on the end.

The can opener straddles the seam that runs around the top of the can. The part that's bent at 90° hooks under the seam on the outside of the can and the semi-sharpened edge opposite the bent part is pushed down on the flat top of the lid next to the seam and cuts a slit in it about 1/2" long. Slide the can opener forward 1/2" and press down again to make another cut (it's kind of a ratcheting motion). Eventually you'll work your way around the entire lid. Watch out for the sharp edge.
