How to properly and legally ship a rifle for repair?

I've shipped a handgun before. Just packed it in a hard case and then in a box and shipped via ups. Can i do the same for a rifle? does it have to be in a hard case(currently do own one for this rifle)? This rifle is going back to the manufacturer for repair.

A rifle you can ship via the post office, parcel post or priority mail. MUCH cheaper than overnight via UPS/FEDEX.

Yep. US Post Office would be much easier and cheaper. Mail the rifle just like you would any other package, nothing special required. (no ammo in the package, obviously.)
