Howdy folks, I'm looking for some info and the paper work to register an AR lower as a SBR in Idaho. I have searched the ATF website and the forums in vain; if anyone knows where I can find a checklist and the paperwork that would be swell.

Thanks

Checklist:
1) Get LEO sign off on the forms (unless using a trust/corporation).
2) Submit forms with prints and photos if individual, or trust/corp paperwork if going that route. Include $200 check.
3) Get receiver engraved with name and location.
4) Wait.
5) Wait more.
6) Receive stamp back.
7) Buy upper and assemble.
8) Grin.

ETA: CoRoMo linked to the Form 4, you actually need the Form 1 since you are making an SBR, not transferring one.

That's certainly more informative than the one link that I dumped on you. Good post LT.

One thing that I think you should at least look into is forming a living trust. It will either be something that you aren't interested in, or you'll see great value in it. It will bypass the first two steps of LT's checklist, and you can end up with a shorter wait time. Buying a computer program (to draft the trust) for less than it will cost in gasoline to drive back and forth to your CLEO makes sense to me. Besides, my LEO charges $20-$30 to do the fingerprints and process my request for a sign off.

CoRoMo makes a good point. Some people have been having problems with Quicken Willmaker trusts not being accepted by ATF, but most are still going through. It skips the LE signoff and prints/photos requirement. If your LE official refuses to sign off, you'll have to go the trust route. My sheriff signs mine no questions asked and I do my own prints at the office so I haven't done the trust thing yet.

I don't know how copious these rejections have been. I've only really heard of one or two, from people on sites like AR15.com that went about it a little hastily/recklessly. But I haven't been trying to search these instances out, so I don't know, there might be quite a few. It sure beats having to send more prints and mugshots to the bureau. Heaven knows they have more than enough of mine already. Over the past year or so, I've PM'd numerous members here because of all the internet banter about invalid trust issues. I think it is really just a few isolated incidences. I don't think the ATF rejects any paperwork just because it was specifically drafted through Quicken software.
