Howdy, I don't like to start another 'which gun' thread but I'm going to anyway.:D

I'd like to spend some of our tax refund on something worthwhile, i.e., firearms.

So, here are my thoughts at this point:

CMP Garand and/or M1 Carbine. I'd eventually like to have a Garand to give each of my kids, and the CMP supply won't last forever. Cons: bit of red tape to get CMP qualified; I haven't shot in any matches, etc. I'm a huge procrastinator. Ammo also pricey.

.45 Colt revolver. SAA type or S&W DA type. I've always wanted one for some reason. I think everyone should have one. My largest non-cap/ball revolver is an old Colt Army&Navy in .41 but I can't shoot that one. Cons: not necessarily practical, expensive ammo, have quite a few handguns already, blah blah.

FAL. I've wanted one since I shot an SAR-48 as a kid. Don't know anything about them other than they're dang cool. Cons: Probably can't afford to shoot 7.62 much. Don't "need" another battle rifle.

Left-handed bolt-action .30-06. I shoot long guns lefty and don't have a left-handed hunting rifle. I don't really hunt, but maybe I would...

M1A: I 'have' one I got for my Father-in law, but not one of my own. I want a 'scout' or 'bush' length as I just think they look cool. Cons: Probably can't afford to shoot 7.62 much. Don't "need" another battle rifle.

Niceish O/U shotgun. Don't really need one; I have a Rem 1100 mag and a Franchi AL48 12-gauge and they pretty much meet any needs I have; I don't really hunt. Don't know why I want an O/U; just do.

Stock up on ar-15 lowers/mags and/or AK type rifles, before the doomsday ban of 2009.:) Cons: Don't really want any more ARs, don't know anything about AKs other than they look cool.

Spend it all on 7.62 or 5.56 ammo before prices REALLY go up.:rolleyes:

Thoughts?

Please, if you have the chance, buy the M1 carbine. I can't say enough good things about it. It can do 200yd matches just fine, ammo's cheap, great HD gun, and most importantly, it is really fun to shoot.

They ain't making anymore GI M1 Carbine's or Garands.

My vote would be for either. Both are incredibly fun to shoot and own.

Chris

For some reason I never really fancied the carbine... seemed like a popgun next to the Garand. I'm sure that's just my ignorance. Is ammo really reasonable? I've never seen any in regular gun shops for anywhere close to a 'deal'... if anything it's more expensive than 'popular' calibers. But I haven't really looked. Can you get .30 Carbine ammo from the CMP?

The best way to get .30 carbine ammo is to order it through J&G in Shotgun News. The best way to get a .30 carbine is to inherit your grandpa's, like I did. It's the one he actually used in WWII. Awesome.

Wow, I can see why you're having trouble. All very good choices. I'd say go with the Garand or Carbine before the supply runs out. Since you don't appear to need anything else for HD I'd go with the Garand. They're classic and powerful. I'll say from experience though that it sucks being on the lane next to the guy with the Garand. I used to ALWAYS end up at the range at the same time as a gentleman with a Garand and he has caused me more pulled shots than my own flinch. They're just LOUD:what:.

At first I didn't realize you meant .45 LC revolver. SAA's are built tough but I don't like loading one round at a time. I really want a revolver in .45 ACP, like the S&W.

Happy spending, hope Uncle Sam gives you a good amount back.

Tax refund?

Seriously, you need to do something about your tax situation. Either you are allowing the government to have your money interest free all year, or you aren't making enough money. Both can be remedied.

As has been said...

Garand or Carbine. You can always get a .45 colt.

If the FAL floats your boat, they are very neat and fun to shoot. They are more limited than AR's in production. They'll likely gain value faster in the event of a ban.

Whatever you do, don't get a CMP Garand. I'm going to order one soon, I don't want them to run out! :D

Seriously though, you should get either the Garand or the carbine. They won't be around much longer, and you can always get the other ones later.

Just sent an order in today, myself ...

Getting a service grade Harrington & Richardson Garand and a 192 round "spam can" of Greek 30.06.

Nick

Field or Service or Correct grade? Weren't they offering a new grade that was put in one of their new stocks for a while? I can't find it on the website now.

Don't get too excited yet; due to the inactivity of Congress refunds are probably going to be delayed and 21 milion people could owe an average of $2000 more than last year.

Hi Sistema1927

A person after my own heart!!!!! The gov takes your taxes at the point of of a gun, why let them have the interest out of the goodness of your heart? That's kind of like telling the armed intruder he overlooked the hidden safe.

I have to 3rd the notion, the government does not need your money you do. If you are getting $1500, I just went with that number, you should adjust your withholding to bring home an extra $30 a week to break even at the end of the year. That is a box or two of ammo a week for your new gun. Wouldn't that be more fun?

Get the one with the best barrel you can afford. Rebarreling isn't cheap. I'm happy with the barrel on my service grade.

Hi Scanr

you should adjust your withholding to bring home an extra $30 a week to break even at the end of the year.

Either that or arrange with your employer to deposit the $30 in an interest bearing account. That way at years' end he could have his 'refund' check if he so desired and bank the interest. The answers the argument 'if I have it I'm going to spend it.'
