How to you find out a Pistol's manufacture date?

Just recieved my Kimber Tactical Custom from my FFL it is used and I am curious when it was manufactured. This model does not have the external extractor so it is not all that old.

1. When did Kimber drop the external extractor anyways?

2. Can I just call Kimber and give them the S/N and they can look up the manufacture date?

I think that's the best, and possibly the only way to find out what you want to know. The records of some of the larger and older companies have been published (see www.proofhouse.com) but Kiimber is not one of them.

i recently bought a rock island armory 45, and it came with a green card with serial numbers and stuff, it had a production date on it but the handwriting is really bad, it looks like 1980 something but the gun is new from the gunstore, and ideas on how to tell.....aside from a call to the mfg.(dont know the #)?
