Howcome The Browning Hi-Power Has Earned Very Little Respect Here At THR~?

Oh yeah. My favorite and go to pistol, both a late 70s that took a trip to Novaks, and an FM Detective. Browning/Fn should be cranking these out and in Detective length as well.

I don't know about respect on this forum. I think it is a high-quality weapon from another era that probably won't be as popular as the polymer guns with high(er) capacity magazines, and so forth. Along with the price for the HP, I think it doesn't get center ring billing on this, or any forum very often. Nothing at all wrong with the gun, however. It is a Browning, after all....

The BHP is actually much respected on this forum. I think what you are seeing is a) the 1911 has a huge following and a huge custom market, and b) the polymer guns are new and there is always something new to talk about there (higher cap, a recall, new models all the time, etc).

The BHP is a rare case of a pistol that was done right the first crack out of the box and people just love them.

I don't think I have ever heard a bad word about a BHP on this forum other than folks don't like the mag safety.

It has my respect but like 1911s its out of my price range. I almost bought a Charles Daly but got a S&W 5906 instead.

Some company needs to start making parts in quantity and then start building Hi-powers like the 1911.

As far as more capacity is concerned, not much out there that holds more than 15+1 rounds.

I'm certainly not aware that the BHP gets no respect here. I don't think I've heard all that much about it period. I think maybe it gets lost in the background noise from the CZ75B.

Nice guns.
But no one wants a full sized hi cap single action 9mm anymore. If people want something like that, they'll get a CZ75, which is even made in SA. The SIG P226 and the Beretta 92 is also in that niche.
It doesn't help that the price on a new Hi Power is ridiculous.

Actually it had a previous iteration, the 1911... But, with a start like that; the end result had to be Perfection (tm)

(oops, I hope the Glock crowd doesn't take offense)

The HP is pretty well respected on this forum (and in general I would guess) but its relatively rare in comparison to say a Glock/Springfield/1911. Whenever there is a BHP thread there are a lot of people chiming in to say how much they love it. Heck, even one of the moderators, Mr Camp, has an entire (excellent) website devoted to the BHP, hipowersandhandguns.com . I think the problem is more of the BHP not being as popular as the "tupperware" pistols. The reason for that is probably due to the fact that the BHP costs more for a heavier gun that contains fewer cartridges. Now that says nothing about its quality or aesthetics at all (it would be quite difficult to find another automatic more pleasing to the eye than the BHP imho) but rather it says more about perceived value.

On a side note, I wonder if they were more popular when the A-Team was a hit show? :D

I +1 on failing to see how it doesn't get respect.

Although they're priced too high for me to buy one--they shake out to be about as good as a CZ-75 or a Beretta 92 (aesthetics, which I don't much care about, notwithstanding), so there's little chance of me getting one.

You mean people are actually still buying new... :what: I mean, what for? :neener:

Actually the Hi-Power is a very high quality piece, with a forged steel frame and slide. Same can be said about older barrels too, and the internals weren't made with a punch-press.

Old School I know, but then .....

I don't see it getting much mention, but neither do I see it being "dissed" when it is mentioned.

I have no experience with it myself, other than handling a .40 version in a gun store. It had a long spur on the hammer that looked like a hand-biter.

Old Fuff,

Of all people, I thought you would know that no forged BHP frame has been made for almost 20 years.

To get a frame strong enough to handle .40, they went to cast for everything.

Horsesoldier, that is a very nice Hi power. I used to really enjoy working on these guns when someone would bring one into the shop. It would be nice to see someone scale up the slide and barrel enough to accept the .45 ACP round, but probably only a select few would buy it in this age of flyweight guns. Only a true connosieur can appreciate the Hi Power. Old school has soul.
