haha, i just love loopholes, and come to think about it the Howdah is really convenient in that sense. it's like having an unregistered short barreled double rifle or a short barreled double barreled shotgun COMPLETELY LEGAL. even a convicted felon could own one, but let's just hope he/she has straightened their life out and is no longer bad person and just needs to protect their family or themselves. they consider this an antique, like BP guns never were used to kill anybody. i just find it cool that the ATF will not bother you about having a Howdah hunter with or without the detachable shoulder stock. although i would not call this a sawnoff right off that bat, it is too beautiful to be one! haha! but it is like one.

As a budding BP gun builder, you already know that just about any section of strong steel pipe can potentially be used as a muzzle loading barrel. That and a fuse are all that's basically needed to make a functioning black powder arm that works like a matchlock without actually needing a lock.
The government would have a difficult time regulating every piece of steel pipe that could serve that purpose.
It just needs to be loaded, put a fuse in it, light it and fire it off just like a portable cannon.

i am a little paranoid about the steel pipe exploding, if there was a failure then there goes my vision, hearing, possibly taste, fingers, life, etc. i would rather use a steel barrel though, the government will probably not regulate air rifles, so the fact that i could remove the gas seal from a cheap .22 springer with a thick barrel, put a firing pin at the end of the piston, and then put a nipple in the barrel by threading both parts. then all i would need to do is put a small charge of BP down the barrel, add a bullet or pellet, cap it, and shoot something! haha! i am sure i could find a decent air pistol to convert. i could possibly make a hybrid air rifle, one that fires both pellets with air, or pellets with a 209 primer or a .22 blank. that would be tremendously fun. all i would need to do is tell the coppers "it's just a BB gun" because it would look exactly like a pellet gun but only i would know the piston has a firing pin on the end and the chamber is reamed to accept it's power source. i think that sounds like a good future project!

Busyhands, check out the definition of "zip gun" in your CA laws.

While the Howdah Hunter is legal, many things you make may not
be under CA law. For example potato cannons are not legal in CA.
The CA law is quite complex and hard to figure out.

I can understand you pleasure at finding exceptions to silly gun laws. However a "convicted felon" may be able to own a muzzle loading or antique firearm (depending on which state they may reside) but if they load it or posess componants to load it they are in violation of federal and most State laws. The same is true for concealed carry of a muzzleloading pistol. If it is loaded it is the same as a modern pistol. No CCW permit--big trouble. Most of them didn't get convicted of cheating at tiddly-winks. Perhaps they should be denied access to firearms. Nonetheless, I enjoy your posts and your enthusiasm.

i wish the second amendment was written "the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" instead of "in the context of a well regulated militia the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" God forbid we ever have to get a "Prius approved" militia license to own a gun as well as having Uncle Sam breathing down our necks. sickens me just thinking about it.
