Howitzer purchase?

Hello all,
37mm, 40mm, 75's, 88mm, you guys think too small!
I want one of these:
Nine 460 mm (18.1 inch) guns, the largest guns ever fitted to any warship.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_battleship_Yamato

Now were talking real firepower.

Just ask the designer of those guns and he would say, "When I talk FIREPOWER I know what I'm talking about"

You know what the best part of those is? Never having to worry about transportation! Once you've got your backyard turret emplacement set up properly, and create some ballistic tables, you just dial in the local range's backstop, and fire away!

well, i killed it so i'm bring it back!

with the tax return i got a hankerin to buy/build a cannon. It is really hard to find a cartridge fed cannon. i suppose they are more heavily regulated?

this is the one i am actually considering. It seams reasonable. It just seems like a waste to me to buy on in .50 caliber. i thought about .68-.69 but that doesnt seem like enough either. if i'm going to invest money in a cannon i want a CANNON! of course you'll notice i picked about the cheapest one abot .69"

replies, thoughts and experiences welcome.

They are not that difficult to build. Now obtaining shells, ammo and the proper, prop charge, igniter, et. al.... That's difficult, plus its not exactly cheap and i'm sure there are some people who are keeping track of such things.

BUT again, not exatly difficult to build.

Cannonball888 -- what do you shoot out of it? youtube videos appear to have ammo(bullets?) that explode on impact. Do you get any sort of accuracy or is it more of a boom machine? i guess accuracy could be hard without sights. and as always, post videos if you have them:D

i would just be shooting lead, but i hoped to find one that can shoot golf balls (1.69"). I could always just throw them on the lathe.

Shells that detonate on impact must come from a rifled cannon shooting cylindrical shells with an impact detonator in the nose. My howitzer is a smoothbore and so like all smoothbores uses shells with a fuse. I have a repro sight for the 1837 US Mountain Howitzer. The cannon can shoot with decent area accuracy but it could never compete with a rifled cannon such as an Ordnance rifle.

Or a German Flak gun for the same price?

That 90mm is the picture I just posted.
Just be aware that every shell is a destructive device, with the $200 tax.
Only the explosive rounds.
Inert rounds - 24lb ball at some 2300fps being adequate for most purposes - are not taxed.
(It's the gun that's the destructive device eliciting $200, not the ammo. In this case, the seller will pay it.)

The 90mm is owned by James DeGroat of DeGroat Tactical Armaments. It's for sale at $125k and is the biggest transferable DD I've ever encountered or heard of.

James claims his 90mm rounds cost about $75 per round to reload. Each round is not considered a destructive device. The projectiles contain no explosive so legally is no different than a .22 short. If you were to load fused AP rounds that would be subject to $200 tax per round as well as a form 1 or 4.

Here’s the specs on his gun:

Gun was built in 1944 in NY
Length 26' 6"
Height 5' 9"
Width 8'
Barrel Length 16' 6"
Weight 6880lbs
Range with AP ammo 12 miles
2800 fps
2.98 Million foot pounds of energy
will peratrate 5" of armor at 1000 yards with AP ammo
Gun recoil length between 42" to 44"
Projectile weight is 24.5lbs
Powder per round 8.06lbs

DIY field pieces can be built fairly cheap if you're shooting BP. Before you start, look through your pantry, and see what size cans you go through the most of. If you value the big boom over big authenticity, chamber your gun for a can full of cement. In the pics below, the little mortar is chambered for a pop (beer) can, and the howie, at 3.00 just fits a 303 can. Think Spaghetti-Os, black olives, beef stew, diced tomatoes, etc, at 2.95 dia.
Either one produces a great boom and smoke-filled visuals. The 3"er looks great being towed behind your family grocery-getter, and at around 300 lbs, is easy to maneuver and pull.
Both are percussion cap fired. Pull the string to swing the hammer.

Nifty! Ever get pulled over while towing it? I would mind a 37mm myself, but I don't know if I can get a mould and dies for that caliber from Lee...

Never been pulled over. Had several folks pull alongside and take my pic with their cell phones, though.
Here's another one I built:
