I have wanted to try some Win 231 and found a bunch of HP 38 at the LGS. I had heard that Win 231 and HP 38 are the same. Is that true?

My email to Winchester and their response:

"April 25, 2011

Sirs,

Are Hodgdon HP-38 and Winchester 231 the same powder?

That is, can the same reloading data for one be used for the other?

Thanks,

---

HP-38 and Winchester 231 are exactly the same powder. They always have been the same powder. The only difference is the label on the bottle. Because they are the same powder, the data would interchange.

You've received truthful answers, nothing to add here. Oh, except for this: go load some up and then shoot 'em!!

maddmaxx11,
Just to add to the information and it's fact, not a guess.
Here are all the crossovers I know of.
W231 = HP-38
W296 = H110
W540 = HS-6
W571 = HS-7 (both discontinued)
W760 = H414
WAP = Silhouette
AA4100 = Enforcer

Get Hodgdon's reloading guide. HP38 and W231 have the exact same numbers load-for-load; charge weight, velocity, and pressure. Same for H110/W296 and H414/W760. Under 357 Magnum rifle H4227 and IMR 4227 have the same numbers too.

Anyone know where I could get some HP38 orW231??
I have been able to find WSF and Alliant powders but no joy on 4lb or 8lb jugs of W231.

LubeckTech - Spring Hill Rod & Gun had both a couple of weeks ago, but no 4lb or 8lb jugs though. Not sure of the price. 768-2090.

Might be worth a call and road trip now that the snow is melting!
