This will be the first effort on the part of www.stopguncontrol.info . I'm asking all members here use the following sample or one of your own to contact your State Representative about this bill. It's the '94 Assault Weapons ban only stronger.

Here is a sample letter that can be used via the "cut and paste" method outlined here-

http://www.stopguncontrol.info/forum...hread.php?t=24

Follow the directions in that post. Once its pasted in the message box at the site you wish to contact you can change the wording to add your name and your Representatives name or any wording you choose to add or delete. It's only a suggested outline, feel free to change it.

Here's a link to find and contact your Representative-

To the Honorable

I am writing you to voice my opposition, in the strongest possible terms, to HR1022, the so called "Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007" as introduced by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-NY. McCarthy entitled her bill the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007, knowing these firearms aren't "assault weapons" and knowing the bill she is reintroducing does nothing to prevent violent crime since the guns in question have seldom been used in crime.

Truth be told, HR 1022 is the old "Assault Weapons Ban" ban on steroids. Fourteen more guns are listed by name than in the '94 ban, and only one "dangerous" feature, such as a pistol grip, is needed to make a "nice" gun into a "bad" gun. The old ban required two "dangerous" features, such as a pistol grip and a folding stock. This distinction effectively expands the scope of the bill to ban a far broader variety of firearms, many used for hunting, recreational shooting, target shooting and personal protection.

Since the U.S. Department of Justice has already documented that the previous "assault weapons" ban did absolutely nothing to stop violent crime, it is clear that HR 1022 is simply a direct attack on the 2nd Amendment rights of gun owners.

More than 10 years ago, the anti-gun lobby and their friends in the media began waging a campaign to frighten people and convince them that the so-called "assault weapons" are rapid fire machine guns when, in reality, they are merely semi-automatic firearms that look different than traditional hunting rifles.

This bill is designed to cripple the firearms industry while infringing on the rights of all gun owners. It is proof positive that the anti-gun members of Congress really don't care about stopping crime or saving lives, they just want to take our guns away.

As a law abiding, tax paying citizen of this State, I fail to see why punishing people like myself and my family with onerous regulations, retro-active laws, and unfair justice serves to promote public safety. This is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to outlaw firearms based on appearance and a few features deemed "dangerous" by Rep. McCarthy. It seems to me that common sense would say that we should enforce the multitude of gun laws already on the books with stiff sentences and give law enforcement the tools they need to bring those using arms illegally to justice. Criminals are the problem, not law abiding gun owners like myself.

I urge you to vote down this bill should it come before you. In these days of terrorist attacks, natural disasters resulting in a complete failure of Government and subsequent social unrest as seen in New Orleans and rampant illegal drug use and resultant crime against persons and property, it seems to me that taking away a persons last line of self defense is unwise at the least. I should hope it is not your intention to vote in favor of bills like HR1022 and leave your constituents defenseless in the face of these issues. Likewise, restricting a hunter, target shooter or recreational shooters choice based on appearance and a few features is unfair and ill advised.

I await your response and hope you share my concerns.

Respectfully

Anytime you can neaten, shorten and simplify a letter to a Congressperson, the better off you are. The staff folks who read stuff just skim, so make it easily read.

One page. Either cleanly hand-written or typed. Courteous and polite. One snail-mail is regarded as representing the view of as many as 300 people.

Quite a few Critters actually will personally read a hand-written letter. They figure that if folks care that much, it may well be a worthwhile read.

I wrote my Congressperson, the Honorable Heather Wilson(R) of the 1st District in New Mexico, a couple of weeks ago. Here is the nice response that I received:

Dear Friend,

Thank you for contacting me about HR 1022, the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act. I appreciate hearing from you.

HR 1022 would reinstate for ten years repealed criminal provisions regarding assault weapons and large capacity ammunition feeding devices.

I support the right of law-abiding adults to protect themselves and their families. I will continue to support efforts to keep guns out of the hands of unsupervised children and I believe we should prosecute and punish criminals who use guns.

When the assault weapons ban was passed in 1994, the entire New Mexico delegation opposed it, including Steve Schiff, then-Congressman Bill Richardson, and both Senator Bingaman and Domenici. Congressmen Richardson and Schiff also both voted to repeal the measure in 1996. I would have voted the same way and I do not object to the law being allowed to expire. The House allowed the assault weapons ban to expire in 2004.

I do not think gun control works to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. If gun control would make us safer, there would be something to say for it. But Washington , D.C. has some of the strongest gun control laws in the country, and I feel safer anywhere in New Mexico than I do walking a block from the Capitol to my apartment at night in Washington , D.C.

Again, thank you for contacting me. Please continue to contact me about issues that are important to you. While I commute from my home in Albuquerque to Washington D.C. , for voting and committee hearings, you can always check my web site for upcoming community events to find where you can catch me around town.

Sincerely,

Heather Wilson
Member of Congress

Thanks Art. This is the first try with this and I could use all the help I can get.

Comon' guys. Make use of the form and tell your "critters" what you think.

Sorry about that Long Stroke. I'm learning as I go.

http://www.stopguncontrol.info/forum/showthread.php?t=19

Try that and if it still doesn't work go to www.stopguncontrol.info then go to the Call To Action section and look under HR1022. Once you get to the site you can cut and paste the form letter or just go on to the NRA-ILA site to contact your Rep and write a quick note to him yourself.

We need a little help here guys. If some of you regulars here can link up to www.stopguncontrol.info and help keep THR informed we can get this moving. I'm trying to keep track of over 30 sites now and it's a bit overwhelming. We also need anyone willing to do so to link to as many other sites as you can and try and get folks going on the campaign to stop HR1022. There's more bills behind that one too and we can get guys in the habit of taking 2 minutes and joting a quick email or letter or phone call off to their Rep or Senator, Gov, etc it will really help.

I don't care how this gets done or who takes credit, lets just push this effort forward. It doesn't cost anything but a little time. 5 or 10,000 emails hitting Washington has to get their attention. Lets take the bull by the horns before we lose our guns!

Does this bill actually have a chance of passing? I know, everyone is freaked out about it, but it gets introduced every year by Rep. McCarthy. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this bill is DOA.

Sometimes Dead Horses Need A Good Beating

Can't say for sure if it's indeed dead and will stay that way so I sent a quick note to my rep. Dennis Hassert (R, IL). Just in case. Here's the text:

As you are my representative in the House I thought I'd voice my apposition regarding HR1022. This is nothing more than another ill conceived Assault Weapons Ban. It would have little if any effect on crime. The Justice Department has already shown that this was the case with the previous ban.

The gun control groups have spread about so much misinformation regarding firearms in an attempt to scare people into supporting their foolish, and in my opinion, unconstitutional legislation. Why would adding a pistol grip to a rifle make it more dangerous? However, this is just one of the items in HR1022 that would make a firearm illegal. Absolute rubbish.

Please, Mr. Hassert, if you care anything for the freedoms granted to the American people by our constitution, do not support this bill. There are much more important and useful things that can be done regarding crime and terrorism.

This is what my representative answered to a poster in floridashootersnetwork.com. As far as I am concerned it will be a waste of time to send her anything. She is an anti-gun zealot and she can get away with it in the area she represents. That's why she is sending letters that do not even attempt to hide where she stands. She is also a co-sponsor of that wicked bill.

Thank you for contacting me regarding gun control. I appreciate hearing from you on this important matter.

Without question, guns present a clear and present danger to our nation's children. According to the Children's Defense Fund, gunfire in America takes the lives of nearly 13 children each day, as firearms are the second-leading cause of death for young people 19 and under. Even more alarming, the rate of firearm death of children under 14 is nearly 12 times higher in the U.S. than in 25 other industrialized countries combined.

I believe there is a need for further legislation pertaining to firearms. Groups such as the National Rifle Association would have you believe that gun control legislation is ultimately not enforceable and ineffective. Such a statement is simply untrue. In fact, the Brady Bill has blocked the sale of more than 400,000 illegal firearms. Additionally, gun manufacturers must take responsibility when they are found to be negligent.

I am a firm believer in gun safety and gun control and have been a staunch advocate for stricter gun control throughout my career. I will remain supportive of gun safety and gun control laws. It is my hope that Congress will pass meaningful gun control legislation in the upcoming year. Our children's lives are at stake.

Please know I will keep your concerns in mind and continue to keep you updated on this and other pressing issues of the 110th Congress. Thank you for contacting my office, and please do not hesitate to do so again regarding this or any other matter. I also invite you to visit my Web site at <a href="http://www.house.gov/schultz">www.house.gov/schultz</a> for additional information and legislative issue updates.

Sincerely,

Debbie Wasserman Schultz

My response from Regula

I wrote all my congressmen and so far, Ralph Regula is the only one that has responded.

Dear Mr. XXXX:
Thank you for your concern regarding the reauthorization of the ban on semi-automatic weapons. I appreciate hearing from you.
In the 104th Congress, a ban on semi-automatic weapons was enacted along with the Brady Bill. I did not vote in favor of this ban. I do not support the ban primarily because an unaccountable agency, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, unchecked discretion in the banning of additional guns that meet these criteria of semi-automatic.
On February 12, 2007, Representative Carolyn McCarthy introduced the Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2007.The bill is currently under consideration in the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security.
Our nation's history has a long tradition of private gun ownership for legitimate reasons. Throughout my career in congress I have supported American citizens' Second Amendment rights and will continue to do so. I do support efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and tough sentences for those people who do commit violent crimes. Often, instead of hindering criminals, gun bans can create more crime by allowing an increase of illegal gun sales on the black market. Though I do not serve on the committee with jurisdiction over this bill, please be assured I will keep your views in mind should this bill come to the House floor for a vote.

It's not much, but at least it's a definitive stance on something, which is better than many concerned citizens get from their elected representatives.

"Does this bill actually have a chance of passing? I know, everyone is freaked out about it, but it gets introduced every year by Rep. McCarthy. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this bill is DOA."

Friend, can we take the chance? This bill pretty much outlaws EVERY SEMI AUTOMATIC RIFLE AND SHOTGUN!!!! And this is only the start, there's a bunch of other bills pending. Check this link to Gun Owners of America-

http://www.gunowners.org/110anatb.htm

There's a bunch of bills affecting guns there. I'll be frank here guys- this crap is starting to scare me. There's all this Legislation moving and maybe 2% of gun owners or those in favor of the 2nd Amend. do anything at all. Yeah, you join NRA or GOA and complain about the Pols doing this, but how many guys DO ANYTHING???!! It takes maybe 2 minutes to send a form letter, 5 minutes to make a phone call. You waste that much time watching the same commercials on TV every day. DO SOMETHING! Get yourself and your friends going on this. Please!

Guys, I'm a 20 year cop. I have 6 kids and a farm to boot. If I can find the time to do this, I know the rest of you can.

Something scary I just read at another site. There is a report that Pres Bush said he was in favor of an "Assault Weapons Bill" and would sign it. No verification on this, but it's out there.

I read something along those lines too. We can not count on Bush for anything let alone gun rights. I agree about what you said that we should all do as much as we can.

I also don't really believe this bill will pass but it doesn't hurt to let them hear our voices. I've sent the e-mails to my three reps.

Anytime you can neaten, shorten and simplify a letter to a Congressperson, the better off you are. The staff folks who read stuff just skim, so make it easily read.

how's this?

Dear Congressperson,

In regards to HR1022;NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

Thank you,
Constiuant

Thanks to all who are helping. What we need is some regulars here to make it a point to stop by our site and help co-ordinate the drives. We have thousands of people on the various gun/shooting/hunting/trapping sites. This could make big waves if we all start writing and calling saying "ENOUGH ALREADY!!!"

To be clear- This is an effort at co-ordinating ALL the sites available. We're not trying to build a website, just a point for co-ordination.

Bogie- "Call in favors"? Are you saying your elected Rep would be doing you a favor by listening or that I'm asking for a favor?
