On a trip to the LGS store on Friday, I saw a lb of HS-7 on the shelf. I know Hodgdon discontinued it a while ago, so data would be hard to find. Almost bought it for the novelty. I already have HS-6 and 231, would HS-7 do anything useful for 9, 40 or 357?

I wasn't aware that Hogdon discontinued HS-7? There is some good data for use in the 9mm, 40 S&W and the 10mm.

It's a slow burner for the 9mm, I don't have the .40 or 10mm data in front of me at the moment, but I would think based on the 9mm application, that it probably rates as a rather slow burner in the other two cartridges.

Speer lists a load range of 8.0 grs. to 8.9 grs. for the 124 gr. jacketed with velocity estimates right at the top 1159 fps - 1249 fps.. That's hotter than Blue Dot estimates!

The data for it is out there and quite easy to find, especially if you have some older reloading books.

If it were me I would be more than happy to make a find like that. I'm always on the prowl for slow burner's for all my reloading needs.

IMO HS-7 (W571) was the best powder for the 10mm and outstanding in the 40 S&W too. It's too bad Hodgdon and Winchester decided to discontinue HS-5 and HS-7, they were as good as they come as is HS-6 for the calibers they are associated with.

Even though I never used it HS-5 was reported to be a very good choice for standard pressure .38 Special ammo much in the way W231 is. HS-5 was the fastest of the HS powder line and in turn HS-7 was the slowest. From what I've heard from Hodgdon They decided to discontinue HS-7 (W571) in favor of Longshot.

I have a pretty good stock pile of it, I use it for my major 9 USPSA loads.

Winchester 571 (HS-7) is my "go to" powder for the 10mm, using 180 and 200 gr. bullets. When Winchester discontinued it, I bought the entire stock Widener's had, so I've still got a good supply of it.

Hope this helps.

Fred

That max velocity is hotter than 115gr with HS-6, which is the hottest load Hodgdon lists for the 115gr. That barely even overlaps Hodgdon's data for the 124gr.
