What's the word on the Federal hydrashocks' Personal Defense round in .357, 130 gr. bullet at 1300 fps? Any information or opinions?

I consider them to be good J frame fodder. I've fired a couple of boxes through my 640 and 649, and they are accurate, and much more controllable than the 110 gr. White Box I had carried for a couple of years.

I carry them in my snubs. They work great in the Smith 340SC as there is no bullet pull at recoil,

Doesn't anyone carry them in full size .357's? I thought that 130 gr's at 1300 fps were pretty impressive ballistics for something that was supposed to have less recoil?

130 gr. at 1300 fps is "mid range" for .357 - The old Remington and Federal 125 gr. loads at 1450 gave the .357 the "king of the hill" rating, and several years on back, there were some 158 gr. bruisers that ran above 1500. Tales of some of the Texas lawmen taking out the differential of a fleeing car, back in the late '30s, were chuckled at later as "Texas Tall Tales". They weren't. I've shot an old Chevy six through the waterjacket, over a cylinder. When the head was pulled, the bullet had stopped at the sleeve, but shattered the piston. This stuff was lead, loaded before jacketed pistol ammunition came along. Load and bullet development have resulted in some fine defensive ammo in the past few years, and they keep getting better. The old stuff relied on raw power.

I can't give you "the word", but I tend to use either Hydra-shoks or WW Silvertips in my firearms because they seem to be pretty accurate and shoot to where I aim. To me that is more critical rather than being 1% or 2% better or worse than another load.

Hydra-shoks seem to have less flash than Silvertips in short barrels so that is what I use in my snubbies.

Anybody know the 2" ballistics on the 130gr per def load?

WW Silvertip .357s didn't have enough crimp for my SC360 Scandium (11.5 oz empty). 158 gr Hydrashoks do, so that's what I carry. Not fun to shoot, but that doesn't really matter.
