I would like to read the humidity inside my safe with some type of hydrometer. I was at a hardware store the other day and they had inexpensive thermometer / hydormeter combinations that I thought would do the trick, but then notices that each one, although in a bin together, was reading differently. Does anyone have any thoughts on an accurate device that can be used? Thanks, Jim

A hydrometer is used to measure the density of a liquid, be it radiator anti-freeze or during wine & spirit making.

What you are looking for is called a Hygrometer.

A typical really accurate one as used by meteorologists consists of both a wet & a dry bulb thermometer swung around on a string to get a reading.

Analog hygrometers are probably not nearly as accurate, but should be close enough for gooberment work.

Digital ones are available now and are also available from Cigar stores.

All in all though, you would probably be better off spending the money on a Golden-Rod and not having to worry about humidity anymore.

Yep. It's called a Sling Psychrometer. My wife uses one daily at her job.

Again, yep. I have had two of them in my humidor for several years, and they NEVER read the same.
I've calibrated them numerous times to no avail.
I suppose it's time to go digital, but I don't like the idea of batteries, plus the analog do look nice in there.;)

Thanks for the correction on the name of the thing. I can see myself going into a cigar store and being sent to the auto parts store! Truth is that I never thought of cigars - good idea. I was thinking of the weather kind, but they don't seem to be as accurate as I would like, no real need to be, I guess. I will check out cigar accessories. Thanks again, Jim

The western humidor digital gauge that rcmodel posted is what I have used for my house and what I currently use for my firearms container. I have one outside and one inside the container.

My method of dehumidification is two constant-on 15W lightbulbs. They keep the temp inside the safe up to 10*F warmer than ambient, and according to the gauges, 5-10%+ less humidity. They also provide light, which is nice to have!

For what its worth, Costco and other stores have sold "Atomic" Digital clocks that hook up with the Fort Collins time signal. Many of them have a humidity readout. $20 gets all that. At least using it, you would be able to check the change in humidity from time to time. No guarantee it will be accurate; but, it will constantly keep you up on the change so you can correct it as needed.
