I was reading my marlin 795 owner manual yesterday and I noticed that it said "Your rifle was designed for high velocity rounds"and it also listed ammo that shot consistently and accurately including:cci mini mag federal etc.etc.So I was wondering if HYPER velocity such as cci velocitor would function properly and not crack the slide/reciever.If any one has used this ammo in a 2011 or newer marlin 795 or 60 please reply,even if you haven't used this ammo and you think it is safe to shoot in my 795 please reply.thanks.

The 60/795 has a plastic buffer on a cross-pin in a steel sub-frame... I think it'll be fine. The "receiver" is really just a cover and something to pin the barrel to. Just check the buffer for wear when you break the gun down for cleaning periodically.

Actually the manual that comes with all Marlin semi-autos says in red letters not to use hyper velocity ammo. I've seen reports where the buffer got broken after just 5 rounds of hyper ammo.

Here is the statement from Marlin that should have come with your rifle unless your rifle is a little older. The warning was different on older models but it essentially said the same thing. They both say not to use hyper velocity ammo.

WARNING: Your rifle is a
self-loading .22 caliber designed for
.22 Long Rifle High Velocity cartridges
only (not Hyper-Velocity);

The manual is online at this address if you'd like to check for yourself.

In short, your buffer will not stand up to hyper velocity ammo driving the bolt back and hitting the buffer over and over. It was designed to be used with high velocity ammo. You would be ok until the buffer broke and then you probably wouldn't know it at first so that the bolt would hit the metal behind where the buffer is. I suppose there is the chance the bolt could break through the aluminum housing behind the buffer but most likely the problem would be the pieces of the buffer getting down in the action causing lots of feeding issues.

Interesting, the older one I had at one time had a rubber buffer. Never an issue with anything I fed it. I wonder if it was an after-market part or something someone made for it? lol

They all have plastic buffers. Maybe someone changed out the one that came with the rifle. My 25 year old 60 has a plastic buffer. AFAIK there has never been a commercially produced rubber buffer for the 60. People sometimes make them and install them but Marlin doesn't and no company sells them. I would think rubber wouldn't stand up nearly as well as nylon anyway. Nylon is a very tough material if it's made right but it will still have enough give to it to be better than steel on steel. Are you sure yours didn't have a nylon buffer? Sometimes people mistake the nylon for rubber too.

Remember that the Stinger, the first hyper velocity round, didn't come out until 1975 so before that there certainly wouldn't have been warnings about using hyper velocity ammo.

I'm 100% certain it was a fairly dense rubber. I'd know nylon when I saw it, as a machinist I work with it every once and a while.

So best to assume it was something someone made for it some time in it's life. I've never owned a new Marlin so good to know. Been thinking on a 795 for a while too.
