I’m done buying “range bags”

I don't know that tools are any less a target for thieves.
I do.
I know for certain a Felon can buy tools anywhere/anytime but guns not so much ...

I have a separate tool bag for each caliber and every auto caliber has its own loader in it.
Most bags are black, so I mark the caliber on the outside with a silver sharpie but with plain numbers, so 9mm gets marked "9", 357 "7", 38SP "8", 45acp "5", 40S&W "0", etc.
To a non-shooter looking into my truck, those numbers mean nothing gun related.

Sorry, that's not range bag related but this is:
I black-out any logos on my range bag/gun cases, and if I can't black-out an embossed/molded in logo like on pistol cases, I black duct tape over them.
jmo,
.

True, but nice tools are a target unfortunately.
I agree that tool bags aren’t a deterrent to a scumbag out to rob you. They will break into a car just to grab a diaper bag if they think it’s worth the trouble.

Same with a backpack, a camera bag, luggage, even a grocery bag!

I used to get on my daughter about leaving a spare handbag in her car. Someone’s going to smash a window and grab it, I’d say. But it doesn’t have anything in it, she’s reply. Yep…my young nurse who was very smart at her profession was that clueless…and within a couple months, guess who was replacing a back window in her Subaru.

My main reason for liking tool bags, as I said, are their strength to weight ratio, shape, and cost. But I do think the tool bags also adds a sense of camouflage for folks who aren’t looking to steal from you but who may be a bit “hoplophibic”

Me too.

But on the flipside, these bags prevent me from being identified as some hick with a gun fetish.

I have a heavy duty nylon range bag that was probably $30 and although kind of small, does the job. I also recommend Klein bags, they will cost you a lil but they are made to last. I have quite a few Dewalt and Milwaukee bags from different tools I've purchased along with hard cases I've though about lining with foam for pistols and mags. You end up buying the tool and half the time the bag or case gets shoved off in a corner somewhere. Shame not to use em since you definitely pay for them.

I have a Midway bag, a 5.11 bag, an Ace Hardware bag, and a couple of 2 and 4 pistol bags. Depends on what I need and how far I’ll carry.

I have this one. Works well. I live in a rural area, so no need to hide labels. When I shoot I just backup and load the truck. Reverse when home.

I bought an Eagle Industries range bag over 30 years ago, still going strong. Has the separate insert with two padded pockets for pistols so you have an open top bag that nests in the main bag. Looks like hell but no tears, busted zippers or seams.
Now if I'm hauling 20 AK mags then I fill my lineman's toolbag. A heavy canvas bag with a leather bottom and a hinged metal framed mouth. Snagged it at a yard sale, along with a bucketfull of brand new Klein tools from a guy who'd retired from the power company.

But yea, today you can find tougher tool bags for cheap compared to dedicated range bags, although most thieves would probably steal tools faster than guns...

While I'm still using the same Blackhawk range bag from 30 years ago I too have one of the accessorized buckets.

In a twist, we couldn't find a sturdy enough "baby bag" before our daughter was born so we got a range bag since the interior could be configured to separate everything by use. It did the job wonderfully and then became my wife's range bag, and then my daughter's.

If you're concerned about theft, put a bottle and a couple of diapers visible in an outside pocket.

Tool bags are good. They can be a bit pricy. Started going to Goodwill and the like stores. Every thing from womens purses to luggage can be found at a good cost.

Red Oxx bags, pricey but worth it and have a lifetime warranty.
