That's if you consider a Red Ryder BB gun a rifle. My oldest great grand daughter has grown a bunch since last summer and has left her Buck BB gun behind for her little sister. The weather is getting warmer and they will spend most of their weekdays here while school is out. We will hunt and kill cans, plastic bottles, and practice golf balls during that time. When you retire you get to be free day care for the family's kids while they work. Don't get me wrong, I love them and enjoy them and they are more curious than cats. My wife and I get to teach them skills that no one else can or will take the time to and they enjoy learning. Not all kids are totally addicted to electronic gadgets and we are doing our part to see these two don't get that way.

It's embarrassing to admit but at almost 8 and 11 years old they are both much more skilled than I will ever be with any electronic device. They remember how to do things while I am busy forgetting how things are done.

Sounds like you are blessed.
My son is still in the learning to walk stage. I am enjoying every minute, but can't wait to teach him how to do everything I can.

I wish I had the experiences like this growing up. My old man taught me a few things but my interests took off on my own and later with friends within the community. I hope to pass what little knowledge I have to my daughter. Sounds like great times to be had.

That is a lot of fun too shoot. Very safe because of having to use the lever to load it

Your a great granddad! Keep it up; especially the part about the Red Ryder (this is a gun forum anyways). Sadly, my kids at too young of their development age lost my dad a 3 years ago; don't ever pass up the opportunity to pass along your wisdom, experience and fun.

There is a lot of experiences that I would love to be able to have the time to do with my kids, but life and work can get in the way from a lot of them. I try and do my best, but that is where Grandparents have such a great role, they often have the time and means to help impression the kids in a good way.

Great Thread. Thank you all that are teaching children responsibly I grew up in school where there were gun racks in the high school parking lot and nobody took them! If you live near a Bass Pro I have seen them teach children with the Red Ryders. Thank you to you doubelh for being a responsible grandparent.

***NOTE regarding Squirrels: put a SLINKY on your feeder works like a charm! YouTube has some funny videos of this.

Recently I picked up a Red Ryder to hang on the wall - after I bring it up to "A Christmas Story" standards.
This means that I must install a compass and a sundial in the stock, at least.
I may also add a magnifying glass, a hidden knife and a magnesium fire starter to bring it up to full 1950s kid survival kit standards.
I might even add the leather decoration that hangs from the cocking lever.
I draw the line at chrome plating, though.
