I bought a Sig GSR

So my tax return came through the other day and I had been planing to use that money to fund a new toy. So yesterday I went to my local shop and picked up a new Sig GSR Carry with the Nitron finish.

I've been wanting a Sig GSR for a long time but I heard the early models had some issues so I wanted to give it some and let the bugs get worked out. I also wanted one that didn't have a rail on it, I've never liked rails on 1911's.

I haven't taken it out yet but I hope to this weekend. I'll give a range report once I've had a chance to shoot it.

You are really going to like your GSR. I have several 1911s but the SIG is my favorite. Works flawless feels solid and is stupidly accurate. Congrats.

My friend just picked up a GSR with "1 of 250" printed on the slide. It shoots really good.

Congrats on a fine gun. I have the full size with the Nitron finish and also opted for no rail. Mine is an earlier gun (not a really early one) and has run flawlessly. Concerns about GRS reliability is old news and no longer relavant, not for a long time now.

So is there a break-in period for this gun? I've heard that some new 1911's need a few hundred rounds through them before they really get reliable. This is my first brand new 1911 so I'm not really sure what to expect. If there is break-in period then I'll be a little less worried if I have any issues the first couple times I take it out.

I hope to shoot it tomorrow if I can squeeze in some shooting time.

psp7304: The GSR does have a similarly operating (to the Series 80) firing pin safety. The one I had had a crisp and clean trigger pull, however. It also has a proprietary external extractor.

There may or may not be a break-in period, it just depends. I’ve heard of some that were shooting 100% right from the box, and others that had to run a couple hundred rounds through it first. Of course, that’s all very subjective because there are too many variables when you read these sort of anecdotal reports. (What ammo? Grip? Magazines? etc ect…)

I had a few nose dives with standard ball rounds at first and was ready to panic. A friend with much more knowledge of the 1911 design told me to relax and shoot a couple hundred rounds before I wrote it off as unreliable. After about 200 rounds or so it shoots 100% for me using hardball and hollow points. Your results may vary.

BTW, a lot of the issues with the GSR were limited to the first 150 or so guns where the gun really amounted to a custom built 1911 made up of a lot premium 1911 parts from various top notch suppliers. The guns were very tight and required tweaking. After that SIG brought more and more of the production in-house and and the issues pretty much ceased. My gun is from a transition period where much of the gun was still parts from non-SIG sources, but with the bugs worked out. Some consider these transitional GRS's to be the best of them, but I think todays's guns are every bit as good if not better.

I bought mine used and I think I paid something like $659 for it, almost the same as for my SW1911. Being in mint condition and with the SIG-Lite night sights, I was pretty happy.

Definitely one of the best looking 1911s I've seen.

I just got rid of my colt commander (s80) before I even fired it just because I felt that although it was a nice gun, you can get more 1911 for your money with another brand. When I can afford another 1911, I think I will be giving Sig a try.

It's good to know that the newer Sig 1911s are reliable. How are the triggers on them? Are they at least somewhat smooth like Kimbers, with little or no play?

That was one thing I didn't like about my series 80 colt. The trigger itself had a lot of play and was rather sloppy feeling. It still had a crisp break to it, but it was far from an ideal 1911 trigger. Sure you could always buy an aftermarket match trigger, but for the money you pay for a Colt you should get one from the factory. Same goes for the hammer, sights, etc.
