Well I got a new shotgun a awile ago:) I would include a picture but all you have to do to see it is go to the remington website. I sold my 12 ga Mossy for $150 to a friend then went out and bought a 20 ga pump, Remington 870 express combo with a ribed smoothbore removable mod chock included and a rifled slug with iron sites barrel. It had the j lock thing on it:( I'll have to get that thing removed sometime soon. Oh its a beautiful gun!! The most beautiful wood grain stock I have ever seen in my short little life as a gun owner. It has a recoil pad on it too. It has these interesting Little white dots on the ironsites which really show up when aiming at dark backgrounds.(can't you tell I'm a newbie;) ) The gun is still a bit too long but not as bad as the 12 ga. I have been getting mixed advice on what to do about that from the gun people over here. One shop owner advised me not to cut the stock because it will ruin the the value of the gun and none of the recoil pad will fit. A gun smith I know said he has some spare stocks that are shorter that he can put on but I don't know about that. One guy told me to just take off the recoil pad and its shorter by an inch or so, but I don't know it I want to do that either.

I was still traumatized by my nasty kicking 12 ga and was nevouse and shaking the first time I took it to the range. But I practiced good form and and did some concentrating and breathing tricks to control my flinch. My first shot was down and to the right of bullseye by an inch. When I flinch my shots go to the left. All the rest of my shots hit the exact same spot till there was just one big hole there. Except a few flinch shots caused by a guy to the left of me with a ported barrel that would startle me even through my ear plugs. Another guy watcing me shoot from the bench to the right finally steps up to help. He complimented my on my form and great groupings. Then he adjusted the iron sites with an allen wrench (didn't know you could do this) I was shooting bullseyes after that! This was on the 25 yd range. I wanted to go to the 50 yd range but there was a long line for each of the benches.

firearms season opened on the 18 here. I have passed up alot of shots due to variouse reasons such as too close to quiting time and didn't want to track in the dark, Bad background, and the killer= Huge buck but just on the edge of my comfortable range. Could of fired and most likely got him but didn't want to risk it. I did shoot a nice little doe a couple of days ago. Perfect double lung shot at about 40 some yards I think. She didn't go far.

Yep, I think I love my new shotgun. I'm actually looking forward to practicing on the range again.
BTW, what is the purpose of the rib on the ribed smoothbore? I have never shot a gun with a rib before.

vent rib....

best explanation I've heard is that it dissipates heat and illiminates the "mirrage" which is created by hot air raising off the barrel, which can mess up your sight picture.

I don't think that would be an issue in the field....but if you're going to bang out multiple rounds of trap/skeet back to back.....that barrel will get nice and toasty.

what sort of ear protection do you use. I find that sound is the bigger problem than kick when it comes to flinching. I started wearing ear plugs and muffs together, I rarely flinch anymore.

Not sure why you would object to replacing the stock with one a little shorter if you need to adjust the LOP . You could then save the original stock to have if needed.

A shotgun should fit - if it doesn't, the results will be loss of it's usfull potential for you. Not realy a problem shooting slugs, but when wing shooting you'll want the LOP to be right.

I would consider that offer to replace with another stock if the expense is appropriate. Factory also makes a youth stock that reduces the LOP. The 20 ga. I am presently shooting I removed the shotgun butt pad, and replaced it with a rifle thickness pad. That reduced the LOP just enough for me.
