Yea, I had the gray one, not sure of Rugers thoughts...heard they had trouble matching stainless parts (barrel and frame) so they came up with the gray blast finish to match them, maybe someone with more knowledge than me will chime in, it was a good shooter for sure, no matter the color...
Ya, nothing matches the gray which is why I prefer the standard stainless finish.

It shoots very well, no matter the color.

Stay safe.

I don't know that I go for that considering the 44mag versions are plain stainless. Plus they make tons of other revolvers in plain stainless. It's the 454 and 480 SRH that are the grey. Never understood exactly why but it's not for the trouble matching stainless parts.

I speculate the special steel they used was prone to rusting or some other sort of visual blemish issue, something that made them feel they needed a finish despite being stainless steel. It's a whole finish versus the bead blast process so it's a lot of effort and effort they never repeated except on the special steel super redhawks of the earlier generations.

Perhaps the newer ones they resolved that issue? Or perhaps someone in marketing had a wild hair and it really was just for no reason
