Game officials are using lifelike robotic deer, turkey, pheasant, grouse and mountain lions to catch poachers.

Puts me in mind of an old Ogden Nash poem:

The hunter crouches 'neath his blind
Midst camoflage of every kind.
He conquers up a quacking noise
To lend allure to his decoys.

This grown man, with pluck and luck
Is hoping to outwit a duck.

I'm for it. I was in Colorado a few years back when I the headlights picked up a nice 4x4 buck on the side of the road on private property before shooting hours. I admired the animal and figuged he would just walk off after having the truck idle for a minute. Thing never moved. Shrugged and drove around the corner and found two DOW trucks wating for a scumbag to try to make an illeagl score. I praised them for thier sevice and think it is great that they have an effective way to stop illegal taking of game.

They've been doing that in Texas for quite a while. They had a very comical video showing at a hunting/fishing/outdoor show in Victoria some years ago. The TP&W had the booth. The vid was guys stopping, spotlighting the robotic deer, shooting it, and getting caught. One guy realizes it ain't alive just as he fires and it doesn't fall, just keeps standing. He puts his gun down, steps out of the truck with his hands in the air, and no one had driven up to him yet. :D It was rather hilarious.

My only problem with it is how long you have to marinate the damned things before you cook them :p

given the information provided on the link it wouldn't seem to be exorbitantly expensive which is also a plus.

In NC, after you shoot the mechanical deer, not only do they take your rifle, impound your truck, and fine you, you get to pay to repair the deer. :D

Our local paper reports almost every arrest in the "Crime Section". Pretty comical when some local big wig gets caught. I'd think that would hurt just as much as the rest.

Small towns, got to love them. Shoot one little mechanical deer and they'll dog you the rest of your life. :D

mo

they set one up on my buddies property. We saw it and went down and took turns taking pictures of us with it with big smiles on our faces. They didn't think it was funny though..

Robo deer stories

Two quick stories, one happened to me the other was told to me by a C.O.

Many, many years ago when I was a teen,:scrutiny: Some buddies and I were hunting. While driving from one local to another, we see this doe standing out in a field.:what:
Of course I slow down, marveling why this goofy doe is standing there. We all comment on the dumb thing and why we can't find a brain dammaged one.:banghead:
As we go by I see it has broom sticks for legs, we all are trying to figure this out (this is before the "robo" deer were common), and in the treeline we see a film crew, just waiting for some "buggy hunter" !

The MDNR had a robo deer set up in a field, guy in a pickup drives slowly by. Proceeds about a mile down the road, parks in a designated area. Gets out and makes a slow long stalk on the "Buck" until the officers see him and interceed before he legally shot the stuffed robo deer. I guess he got a chuckle out it, he had wondered why it stayed in one place so long!

Best for the New Year.......... Mike
