This is the hottest AK I have ever seen.
If you've wanted a Galil or Valmet because of the AK reliability with better sights, this is the rifle for you. The VEPR KTR-03 is a highly modified VEPR. The KTR has the following features:

Hammer-Forged, Chrome-Lined Barrel 14" to 16" with permanent AK type Muzzle Brake.
Rear M16 Style Peep Sight.
M16 Style Front Sight.
Picatinny Rail on top of Dust Cover.
Thumb Safety on Right Side.
Available in .223, 7.62x39mm, 5.45x39mm (this model requires a 16" barrel).

Retail Price $1,149.99.

But, uh, the price is a little much...

George, I got to handle one of the first ones. They are very nice.

However you can get similar features for a lot less money if you buy a Vepr, buy the Krebs A2 receiver sites. However then you lose out on the nifty Galil safety and you are stuck with having the ears from the old front site assembly in place.

Excellent weapons.

drooooooling

Price is a little steep though. I would have to have a better look at that dust cover/sight set up to convince me.

I could put m16 sights on a broom but that don't mean it would be accurate.

nice looket though.

Bevr... Veprs are very accurate rifles. These are not your cheap SARs... these are seriously fine examples of what a good AK is capable of.
I'd even put a Vepr up against any standard grade AR and a Super Vepr against any Match AR.

George,

Oh yeah I'm aware that the VERP's are the AK to have and that is for sure.

I just was remarking about how they could stabilize the dust cover to such a degree as to mount a micro adjustable sight on it.

Most of the std vepr's have the sight mounted in a taditional manner. I've seen scope mounts on dust covers before but they sure as hell wouldn't hold any resemblance of a zero.

I would love to replace my sar-1 with any vepr but alas I am a half step above the peasant I once was.

If it is a stable mount then mounting a red dot sight would make a sublime battle instrument. It would really be quite nearly perfect.

Somebody here did a full review of those (Kreb's Custom, who works closely with Robinson Armament) M16 style sights. Can't recall who, though I'm sure he'll chime in eventually.

The price is high 'cause basically they're custom jobs.

Cool as hell, but pricey(but what good thing isn't anymore)?

For those who have handled one, is it still heavy in relation to a "standard" AK?

Heavy receiver... $1200... from Robinson... why not just pony up the extra couple hundred at that level, buy their M96 and be done with it?

I'm sure it's built like a tank, and since they do have a reputation to maintain I imagine they figured out a pretty darn good solution for the dustcover mounted sight (leery as the idea looks, they're smart folks)... it just seems kinda.. well... pointless.

At least, pointless on the north side of $600 or so.

I talked to Bryan at Krebs, today. He stated the rear AR style sight is $65, but it would be another $65 to have it installed on your dust cover. They also require you to ship the recoil spring assembly, because they do a custom job to the take-down button in order to put more stabilizing pressure on the receiver (or something like that.) Basically, they make the dust cover more sturdy, so the sight will hold a zero.

For $65, I would have my parts in the mail tomorrow. For twice that, I'll have to do some thinking, to be sure that's REALLY what I want to do to my rifle (same price as adding a Kobra.)

I'll probably end up just getting the Kobra, and using my Mojo ghost ring if I want to shoot with irons. Oh well... too bad they aren't cheaper.

I'd rather have one of these:
Our latest project, the RAV02 MC (Pronounced "RAVE") was very successful. It can be chambered for 5.56 NATO; 7.62x39mm; and 5.45x39mm. It was developed and tested to current military specifications. Soldiers who have shot it prefer it hands down over the M4 Carbine. Even using the 7.62x39mm round, it is as accurate as an M4 Carbine. it can digest steel or brass cased ammunition fed through AK47 magazines and drums. The Rifle Features the S.I.R. (Swan Integrated Rail System) which give the rifle Accessory Rails (Picatinny Rails) at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 O'clock positions. The reliability also surpasses the M4 Carbine.
Unfortunately, they don't make a civvie version. :(
Note: This rifle is for military sales only. It will not be sold to police and Class 03 dealers at this time. There is a civilian version of this rifle in semi-automatic. It is the M96 Recon Carbine.
We have discontinued plans to make the M96 in 7.62x39mm.

I'm the guy with the review of the Krebs sight.

I like them. They retain their zero. How good do they work? Yesterday I shot in a 3 gun match with it. Did a rifle Bill drill, (six shots on a single target at 40 yards) Three strings, I did it in under 3.5 seconds each time. So about as good as I could do with anything with iron sights. (did it with an EOtech in 1.8) Another stage was 3 shots at 30 yards, 3 shots at 50 yards, and 3 shots at 70 yards. My best run on that one was 8 seconds with the irons. (6.5 with the EOtech). The Vepr times are not really a fair comparison to the holosight times because the EOtech was on an AR with a muzzle brake. My Vepr has a crowned muzzle and is shooting a cartridge with more recoil. Either way the Krebs sights really work well if you prefer peep sights.

As for the Vepr stock, it is my least favorite part of the gun, but that is mostly due to the shape of the butt, I like them flat, not angled. Also I prefer rubber instead of plastic, not for the recoil control, but for the fact that it sticks in the pocket under rapid fire. I'm going to take a saw to mine, knock off the angle and mount a pad on it.

It has a thumb safety just above the pistol grip on the left side...I wonder if the receiver mounted safety on the right side is disabled, or does the gun have two manual safeties? I think a Galil style charging handle would be very cool.
