i swear that with all the idiots in omaha running around its going to get to the point that nebraska is going to become ridiculous with gun control laws. Sounds to me like the idiot should be charged with something, who shows off a loaded weapon at a party? i'm starting to think that maybe they need to give a common sense test when you go in to buy a gun anymore. i'm 18 and because of idiots like this, and the two others (from this weekend and the westroads mall shooting) anytime someone finds out i like guns and own several they give me this look like i am going to go on a shooting rampage. somebody please tell me their is still some hope that our lovely legislators won't just look at the previous three idiots and punish the rest of us law abiding gun owners.

There is always hope, my friend. Just make your passionate (but reasoned) position known to your legislators, and hold them to the oaths they swore upon taking Office. Participate in grassroots effort and donate to RKBA orgs when your budget allows.

I understand your frustration, however. I, too, get that look sometimes, which I why I've since decided not to share with more than a select few that I even own guns. The trouble is everything is a giant PR / public opinion issue these days. Rather than working to preserve our liberty, those in power would sooner piss on this country and all that it stands for to maintain political office.

significant dates in my life in Omaha

Dec 22 1965 Born in Omaha
Dec 22 1983 Turned 18 in Omaha
Dec 23 1983 Moved out of Omaha and never went back.
Omaha's a great place to be from ......far from.

Tragic.

But I'm sure if her daughter had been injured by a drunk driver, her mother would be advocating stronger drunk-driving laws, and not the removal of cars from society.

I live in the Omaha metro. I'm sad the OP feels the way he does. Things get worse. Within the past week, another senseless murder occurred.

"A woman in her car was shot and killed in the drive-through lane of a Florence-area fast-food restaurant Sunday night.

Omaha police did not release the victim's name or many other details about the shooting, which was reported at 8:39 p.m. at the Kentucky Fried Chicken/Long John Silver's Seafood at 7601 N. 30th St.

The Omaha Police Department's homicide unit was investigating at the scene.

When officers first arrived at the restaurant, they found a woman with a gunshot wound sitting in a car. Scanner reports described a person wounded in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Minutes after the shooting, police had cordoned off the entire parking lot of the restaurant at 7601 N. 30th St.

About 9:10 p.m., as uniformed officers scoured the area, a car suddenly pulled away from the north side of Craig Street and headed east. An officer on foot banged on the car with his flashlight and tried to get it to stop.

The car kept going, and at least one police cruiser then roared off after it. There was no word as to what role that vehicle may have played in the shooting, if any.

At the restaurant, a sheet was draped over the front windshield of a white Ford Focus in the drive-through lane.

The shooting shocked and frightened many who live and work in the area."

This shocking murder was committed by a 19 year old loser utilizing a .243Win Remington bolt action scoped rifle, from more than 100 yards from the victim.

Unlike the OP, I realize my city is prone to the same insane crimes prevalent throughout the USA. This latest senseless sniping crime could have been much worse, emulating the bastage that terrorized our Von Maur shopping center. This senseless crime didn't escalate into that sort of tragedy, and maybe (I don't know yet) the local police department had a hand in the prevention.

A young bastage utilized a .243Win bolt action scoped Remington rifle to murder an unknown girl sitting in her car within a fast-food drive-thru lane from over 100 yards away. He didn't know the victim. How awful is this?

Yet the OP draws conclusions about my city, and some Colorado interloper mentions his hatred for Omaha. It's ridiculous, and should be recognized as madness and ridiculousness.

Lienen wants the teen charged with felony assault and she wants him to serve jail time. She also wants tougher gun-control laws.

"We need to have better laws to prevent this from happening to my daughter, anybody else's daughter or to any victim," said Lienen

I feel bad for Mrs Lienen. But these laws are already on the books.
Another person who can't see the forest for the trees.

I enjoyed living in Omaha, but then I was there from 1966 to 1971. We had some great riots on North 24th and at Memorial Park.
Went to Omaha Central HS. Was in ROTC and was assigned a fully functional M1. Took it home on the bus, walked through the front door of the school with it.
Most of my friends volunteered or got drafted and went to Nam. I hung with the crips (not the gang, the ones that come back missing body parts).
Still recall the geography of the place. As long as you stay east of 32nd street in midtown you're OK. North or south stay east of 52nd. I loved to hang on North 24th... LOL.
BTW, did you know the White Panthers were founded in Omaha?
Have never been back to Omaha, but have many fond memories - first time I got drunk, first time I was stabbed, first time I was shot, first time, er, with a girl, first visit to the draft board.
How could ya not luv the place?!?
