I see this here and on other forums all the time, people post that they always answer their door to strangers with a gun in hand, maybe not visible to the person at the door but always in hand.

I was always taught that if you wouldn’t do it without a gun you shouldn’t do it with a gun so I have to ask, if the person you’re opening the door for is that much of a concern that you need to do it with a gun in your hand why even open the door at all.

Not everyone has an entryway that allows them to ID a visitor without opening the door. I am one of them. However, I can see the entryway from an upstairs window, so if I get an unexpected knock I will run upstairs to look. If I couldn't, I would ask my propery manager to install a front door with a window.

In regards to the ‘wouldn't do it without a gun you shouldn't do it with a gun’ mantra, there’s a difference between you looking for trouble and trouble finding you. There are certain areas around where I live that I don’t feel safe in and would not go to regardless if I was carrying (me looking for trouble). In my opinion, this is the situation the saying refers to. Now, despite the fact that I live in a very safe neighborhood and have little to no worries about violent crimes, something bad still could happen (trouble finding me). Being prudent and carrying my gun at all time (even answering my door in my safe neighborhood) does not fall under what the saying is trying to stipulate.

Just my two cents…

I'm not talking about carrying at home, I'm talking about going to the door gun in hand .

When I was a kid I was riding in the car with my mother one night when she had an accident. This was prior to cell phones so I went up to someone’s door to call the police.

They came to the door but didn't open it, asked who I was and told me they weren’t going to open the door but that they’d be happy to call the police, which they did. The entire transaction took place without them ever opening the door.

Why Bring it Up Again?

The OP had a better idea six months ago, and we just had a 137 post thread on essentially the same subject last month.

Nothing to see here, folks.
