I was watching the remake of Dawn of the Dead which although not realistic in the sense of the Zombies, was quite realistic in terms of the guns used, and how people handled everyone they knew turning into savage undead beasts.

So, folks, in the event of Zombie attack, what would you use? (My choice is Mossberg 590, WASR-10, and thick layered clothing) :neener: :neener: :neener:

.30 M1 carbine, with pockets and rucksacks full of magazines. Fit the thing with a red dot sight, and a quick release 4x scope.

Small, maneuverable, next to no recoil, bullet big enough/fast enough to do the job.

Downside would be locating more ammo.

You know what would be nice? A 9mm M1 carbine...

These threads are always interesting... I guess I'd go with my newest toy... Remington 521-T .22LR with Lyman 57RS rear sight and 17A front with aperture insert. Stoke it with Wallyworld Federal High Velocity 36gr and know the elevation to make head shots at 100yds or more. Before anybody starts flaming, with the rear sight on the 25' setting, anything out to 40yds and I owned it the first time informally plinking. Otherwise, my Winchester .30-30 with the tang sight that I brag about, or a Marlin .357mag carbine w/ reciever sight if I can get one and stoke 'em with cast lead- 165gr LFP and 158gr LFP respectively. Up close it'd be the M1911A1 because that's what I'm used to, or maybe a S&W M10 so if I'm shooting .38spl handloads in the Marlin, it'll cross up in the sidearm. And there's always my Mini-14 for which I can select M193 ball ammo fed from 20rd and 30rd mags. Although, for a lot further out, the M1 Garand would be great...

I am not normally a fan of horror movies because they are mostly stupid and not scary but Dawn of the Dead was a really good moive. Not only was I scared at times, I was entertained the entire time. I loved the guys in the mall, they reminded me of people I have met before. The gunstore owner that camps out on top of his store and shoots Zombies all day was a riot!

I thought about what he was doing and if I were him, I would have used an AR-15 because the recoil wouldn't kill me after a long day of shooting dead people in the head.:D Also, they were pretty close and there were a lot of them. Head shots were all that counted and a .223 does pack a wallop on a pumkin so I think a human head would react about the same.

How about an AR-15 with a huge pile of loaded 30rd mags? Give me unlimited ammo and I could thin down the crowds in time.

What made me mad about the gunstore guy was, he did with a store full of ammo and guns. I would have shot every round in the place except for a few carry guns and THEN tried to make a break for it. I would hate to go with an entire store full of guns and ammo. What a waste!

As for the few guns I would take with me, I would keep it simple. Probably two Glock 17s, a riot shotgun and a rifle that could be used for long range. Probably something like a H&K G-3 or FAL.

The prolem with the gunstore is that he was out of food and water. Trying to supply him with food is how the whole zombies infiltrating the mall thing happened.

All the ammo in the world does you no good if you are starving/dehydrating to death.

interestingly enough the book I linked to discusses and discounts the .22lr

serious zombie killers know better :neener:

Which is why you should always have food and water stockpiled ahead of time.

Zombies are pretty easy, all you gotta do is pop them in the head. Last I checked a .22LR will go through the human skull so presto, dead zombie.

Land of the Dead is a good one too, its a continuation from Day of the Dead, sorta the fourth of the series kinda thing.

I really liked these movies.

In the old "Dead Movies" the dead were slow and lumbering, thus you could use anything to shoot them- bolt action rifles, pump shotguns, etc. They were a minimal threat, unless a mob of them surrounded a house.

In "Dawn of the Dead" (2004 remake) (and in 28 Day later) the zombies obviously run like track stars and in that case you better have a semi-auto rifle with a big mag. The obvious challenge is getting good head shots.

As far as "Andy" the gun shop owner, I have to agree with Albanian. He should have tried to make a sizable dent in the zombie hordes with his sniper rifle. Sure, at one point it would get to be exhausting... but who knows, it might thin the herd. Do the math. How many 308 rounds does a gun store usually stock? How many zombies were in the parking lot? He couldn't have killed them all, but reducing the number may have helped with the escape later on. I'm not sure.

If you go back to "Day of the Dead" (1985) the best solution would have been to helicopter a commando team into a military based, secure arms plus an armored convoy... then come back for survivors and drive up the highway to DC or some other location with hatches buttoned up tight- laying down M60 fire when necessary.

Yes, it is easy to flame this topic as "pure fantasy" but it is fun to discuss.

i love these kinds of moovies, "resident evil" is a good one and my favorite is "28 days later". ill have to agree with the small and light ammo, an accurate .30 m-1 carbine would be an ideal close in gun.

if i had to take what i could carry on my back, i would take an ar-15 and a beretta-92.

if i could have a jeep i would take lots of food and water and then take all the guns and ammo i could fit:D

if i had my house... boy oh boy, if your a zombie stay away. our house would be solid, the doors and windows would be bricked in and reinforced with rebar:D, there would be an improvised "safe room" for mom and the sister with all the essentials. me, my bro, and dad would have a field day with it. we'd put some lawn chairs on the roof, grab the gun of choice and sit and wait:D

i like thinking about this kind of stuff:D

I'm not sure if I should be alarmed or impressed with how serious you are taking this :neener:

ya know, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Shaun of the Dead, that was really funny..

IMHO (and before thread lock): .223/5.56. It's very abundant, cheap to stockpile, accurate to 500 yards or more, low recoil, small enough for very large magazines, and light enought to carry tons of rounds.

.30 carbine seems pretty good, or one of the Ruger carbines in 9mm. Apparently the key is that you need fast, accurate headshots, so you want the minimum caliber that will punch a cranium for lowered recoil and faster recovery. .223 would certainly work, and yeah, if I were holed up in a gunshop without food and water, I'd bet on running out of zombies before bullets and shooting all day every day if I was starting to starve. In the director's cut they had the guy saying something about attracting more with the noise than he was killing, and I was like "so shoot faster!"
