"I know you hate pot metal, but...."

So, I walked into my buddys' shop today and first thing he says to me (while unlocking his safe) is "I know you hate pot metal, but I think I took in something you might like. Any guesses?"

And you know what, I nailed it on the first try. You shoulda seen the look on his face- priceless!

Now he knows that I like old guns, and normally this was the sort of thing I'd be into- if it wasn't mostly cast zinc anyway. The condition wasn't great either, and it feels like it might need some work.....so I'm probably going to pass.

Anybody else want to hazard a guess what it was?

I wouldn’t be able not to. Such a silly thing, but such an interesting piece of history. I would shoot a box through it and know for a fact I had shot it more than anyone else ever did.

Colt Thuer?

Had to look that one up- I know them as the Lord and Lady Derringers. Haha, no. What a stupid idea by Colt, though. If your going to make a gun for display only, why even make it capable of chambering a round? SMH.

Walther had a similar dumb idea during WW2, making some PP/PPK for high-ranking Nazi Party officials that were not supposed to actually be fired, but could chamber live ammo. IIRC, they were mostly steel, but never heat-treated.

Those colt zamak barreled wonders actually would work. I bought one from the time period after Colt dropped the contract, and I had my fun with it. 22shorts were a handful in such a tiny gun with no real way to hang onto it. I shot the rifling out of it pretty quickly. I then rechambered it to take supercolibri ammo and shot it a lot more. At 10 yards it was a 10” group and there was no pattern at all. I traded it away for a little metal trailer to pull around with a lawn mower.

Just remembered the name… Butler. Kind of an interesting history on those guns and the life of the company.

Getting close to 20,000 rounds through my 2 GSG 1911 22's . Fun and reliable.

You laugh - I know a guy who did put a handmade extended barrel and a handmade metal wire arm brace on a J-22, just to see if it COULD be accurate. It worked, sort of, somewhat, to an extent...it also got him no end of ribbing.
