I Love Single Shot Shotguns

Nice case color NEF receiver! The colors have held up well. I have one as well, with a 28" 20ga barrel that I have frequently used for ruffies. Mine has faded and gone quite straw colored. They are so abrupt to flush that one shot is frequently all you get anyway!

That's the way of a lot of critters around here. If I don't get 'em with the first shot, there's not much sense in trying to take a second shot.

The first shotgun I ever hunted with (for rabbits on Ohio farm lots ) was an Iver Johnson Champion back in the late fifties. You might only have one shot but every single-shot I ever brought to my shoulder handled (pointed) better than many repeaters. I don't have the "Champ" anymore but it did have an ugly "Bakelite"(?) stock.

My first "trap" gun was a 37 Winchester "Steelbilt" that I silver soldered a rib from a High Standard fire victim, added a trigger shoe, and a lace on cheek piece. Won a ton of 10 bird meat shoots, etc

Bit my teeth on an Stevens .410 of unremembered model. Graduated to an H&R Topper in 12ga.

Probably 20 years ago I I had an H&R Topper Deluxe in 20 ga. Had to send it back because the transfer bar broke. I never trusted it after that and traded it off. What a fool I was and would love to have it back today.

I don't know about that. A transfer bar that breaks would have me doubting the gun. It's hard to restore trust when you've been betrayed by something so basic to the safety and operation of a firearm. Any firearm.
That's the way I felt about it at the time but not so sure about that now. If it did it again THEN I would be really unhappy.

I love the lil H&R and other single shot shotguns-n rifles for that matter. I have had one since I was a young adult... cut many down to legal length for SD and brush guns- lost several to friends and used one for years as a "travel gun" before ccw was an option... even a single shot shotty with ejectors is formidable while being non offensive to most. They made/make great hotel guns when ya do not know the local regs and even bird shot would suffice without screaming tactical :) gun. I have a few 12s na 20 around that make great "utility" guns for the home/garden/homestead. they are like glocks to be- the cheap ones anyhow- not a "zen gun" or perfect but perfectly useful for many things :D

Decent is relative friend.

Some not so well heeled have managed to get by with Pardners, 37s, etc.

They seem pretty decent to me.

Well heeled? :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

I used what little savings I had, a tax return, and the first stimulus check to pay for that Ljutic. I was also lucky that the guy I bought it from was willing to take payments over time. I have owned several H&R single shots over the years, and a Win. 37. I realize thier utility, and seem decent to me, also, for thier intended purpose. But I have only seen one person shoot Trap at a competitive level with a single shot of that ilk, and that was because that's what he had, he worked at the Trap range, and was a natural shot. Had he continued shooting Trap, I'm sure he would have eventually got a gun more suited for it. But there's a reason you don't see the 16 yard line full of H&R Toppers (even the Trap model; yes they made one), and there's a reason you don't see me bumping around the woods with my Ljutic.

You are confused.

My comment was not towards you but towards the elitist remark made by “George P”

I'm sure he'll answer. And, no I wasn't confused. My point was that one does not need to be 'well heeled' to afford such a gun, if you want it bad enough. BTW, it took me 40 years between shooting one and desire for one, until I got it. It was worth the wait.I also realized your point in starting this thread. If you are attempting class warfare here, you realize your idol was on the opposite side than you are championing. ;)

Cooper was an elitist in every sense of the word. Good and bad.

My intent in posting the Ljutic was injecting a little humor into it, (the weight), and pointing out there are different types of single barrel shotguns for different uses.

Some people are never happy with anything less than what they conceive to be the best. If that makes them happy so be it. Others are happy with what they can afford and appreciate what their hard earned dollars have bought them. Personally fit and function are what is important and the fact that the gun does what it's expected to do. Never having been one for high end guns I can see where your coming from. Also I'd be a wreck if I damaged an expensive gun.

Not elitist at all; What's wrong with appreciating something nicer than some low-priced object? Too many folks with wealth envy I guess. Most of the other guns kick like mules, typically don't fit most folks very well and do not hold up to a lot of vigorous use like that Ljutic - but as Entropy said, it is a specialized use item made for one specific thing - ATA trap singles - and for that it is one of the best made for that purpose

I would love to find an h & r 20 to go with my 12. Honestly when hunting pheasants anymore I tote the single shot 12. It is light and carries like nothing. For doves I may use my berreta auto but it weighs twice what a single does.

Nothing better than a full choke single for turkeys. Can only shoot 1 anyway.

Recently picked up some mini slugs and they are a good time at my range shooting steel.
