OK, I bought a revolver for the first time since last summer. What did I choose? Well, if you remember my "help me decide" thread, it wasn't any of them.

I was checking out another local part-time shop (the one where I bought my Colt Police Positive Special a year ago) and he had several nice revolvers for good (at least for around here) prices.

He had a S&W Chief's Special/36 that was WWII vintage. The wife of the original (only prior) owner thought he might have carried it with him in the tailgun position of his B-17. It was in pretty decent shape but the trigger was very heavy and I'm not a collector and I'm not sure I'd want to shoot (let alone carry should I move to a CCW state down the line sometime) a gun w/ that much history. It was about $230.

He had a Colt Trooper for somewhere in the 300s. Good shape, but I've decided I don't like Colt DA triggers much.

He had a S&W 28 that looked brand new for $499.

He had a variety of K-frame .357s and .38s for pretty much normal prices around here, just a tad better considering condition. Most were LNIB and the .38s were in the low to mid $200s and the mags were in the low $300s.

He also had several very nice used Colt Delta Elites for $699 and a Colt 1911 (didn't notice if 70 or 80) in .38super for the same price.

I was going to move on and wait for the gun show but he noticed I seemed to prefer K-frames (well, not necessarily but that is what I was primarily looking for this time) and that I was looking mainly at blued guns he brought out one he just got in recently but hadn't logged into stock yet due to being busy preparing for the gunshow.

It was a 19-4 with the Diamond grips; it was pinned and recessed; it appeared nearly unfired looking at the barrel, cone and chambers; and the blueing was almost perfect except for one place on the cylinder where it was worn off (it was obviously a home defense gun owned by one of those people who buy a gun and try it once or twice and then load it and stuff it in a drawer- all the wear was probably from contact with the drawer it was in). The price, $279 (typical of OK to slightly beat up used .357s around here), for one that was almost perfect.:what:

The trigger was stock so it was good, but not as good as the M13 at the other dealer. Unfortunately, it also has a wide target hammer and trigger (I much prefer the regular hammers and especially triggers). I might send it right off to Cylinder and Slide or Smith and Wesson for a trigger job (eventually, within a year or so I almost certainly will, I might after shooting it once or twice after getting it). I also may swap out the hammer and trigger (then again this will be a range gun so maybe not- it is already configured the way many people want and, at least around here, I should be able to sell it for a small profit should I ever need/want to do so).

Anyway, I think I made out, at least considering local prices.

There is a 10 day waiting period here and this is a part-time dealer on top of that so I can't pick it up until the 17th so a range report will have to wait.

Congratulations

Your gonna get a lot of the following --be prepared.

Your about to become addicted and may find the stock condition you have is very good. You'll end up NOT sending it off once you shoot it.

Yup, you did good - very good, and I think you're going to be a happy camper. I do have a question though. The Smith & Wesson model 36 (Chief Special) was introduced in 1950, long after World War Two. So whatever you looked at must have been mis-identified. Any idea what it might really be?

Based on your posts at the Taurus forum, I thought for sure that you had bought another Taurus....oh, well, maybe next time.

Well, I do really like Taurus. They are easily some of the best deals out there today in new guns IMHO. I also think they make some of the best purpose-built revolvers out there (self-defense/carry: 450/445/441, titanium models, the 731, the new 9mm snub, etc. Woods/hunting: the Trackers, the Raging Bulls. Novelty/Unusual items: Raging Bee, 12" revolvers, .30Carbine revolver "Raging Thirty", .17H&R Mag revolver). However, I have really developed a fondness for the DA trigger on classic S&Ws- for a just for fun general gun I really love them now. New S&W or new Taurus and I'd prefer a Taurus (usually) but used S&W and new Taurus or S&W and I'd prefer a good condition used S&W (again, if just a general use/fun gun).

Of course, I do plan to get a handful of Taurus revolvers and autos in the near future:
-450. 2" .45LC probably soon (may be a primary carry gun when/if I end up in a CCW state)
-9mm snub. I can't wait.
-Taurus 94
-PT911 or 945
-maybe the Millenium or Millenium Pro
and eventually a PT92.

Hey, it isn't marriage- being into both isn't a sin.:D

Don't think the Chief Special was WW II. It didn't make its debut until the '50s or '60s. But that's academic and the guns are in great shape and at a great price. Congratulations and enjoy!
