I missed out on the gun deal of the century today.

This afternoon I was hanging out, visiting a friend who works in a local gunshop, killing time between classes. I was suppose to pick up my student loan check today, but the line was too long to get thru in time to make it back to class. (This is VERY important to the story.)

So, there I was, shooting the breeze when a gentleman walks in and tells Josh that he has an HK91, which has NEVER been fired, that he wants to sell, in order to finance a desired upgrade in HAM radio equipment. Josh asks how much he's looking to get for the rifle. The guy says "Well, I know it's worth around $2,000, so I'd like to get $1,000 for it." He showed us the rifle, which was in factory new condition, with cosmoline still in the chamber! Apparently, the rifle had been a gift over 20 years ago, so he didn't have so much as a penny into it.

If only I had been able to pick up my check! Josh didn't have the money himself and the store is closing at the end of the month, so the owner won't buy anything. Josh told the guy to hold on, he knew someone who would want it and gave another guy a call. Of course, the other guy did end up getting the rifle. I had asked the seller if he'd take a personal check and hold it and the rifle until the check cleared, but he was skeptical of doing so. I even offered to up the price to $1,200, but he was still not interested. Right about then, Jim came in and looked at the rifle. It didn't take long for him to ask the guy to wait for him to run to the bank and get the money.

So, if only I had been able to pick up my check earlier, I'd have been able to buy an unfired, real-deal HK, not a Century clone, HK91 for the low price of $1,000. I could have easily sold it for twice that price, making a fat profit for little or no work. However, the Good Lord wasn't smiling down on me today. Oh well, one of these days......

Frank, they do say it's good for the soul to suffer disappointments like that... but even as a pastor, I'd have been using a few words I'm not supposed to know! Man, that hurts...

Ahhhhhh... yeah. I know this feeling well.

I used to play this game with myself when making the rounds of the local gunstores- If I saw something that caught my eye; I'd tell myself "if it's still here next week, I'll pick it up."

Invariably it wouldn't be there, so I adopted the ideal that if I saw it and had the funds, damn the torpedoes.

Just don't think about it Frank... I have convinced myself that deals like that come around again. They HAVE TOO.

You know, I'm a big fan of Karma, and the Karma police caught you attempting to make a profit on something that hopefully will bring some joy to the guy that picked it up for a grand.

I was always skeptical about Karma until me and some buddies a couple years ago were discussing what we do if we found a wallet. Some of us were young and had ill intentions...a week later I lost my wallet. Ever since then I've been in fear of the Karma police.

But anyways, I feel your pain about the financial aid, doesn't your school have direct deposit? We are in the 21st century now.

Geez I would have probably let the guy hold on to my wallet and car keys while I ran to get a check/credit card/whole blood....whatever he wanted really. :D

My financial aid check is mailed to me, your school is just cheap :cuss: I've never missed out on something that good, but I feel your pain.

Bad Bruce! Bad bad. No treat! ;)

1st gunshow after I got my credit card. My limit was just shy of being able to buy a slightly used Barret Mod 82 w/ optics for $3000. This was 1991. Never seen one before. Never knew such a beast existied, but if I had had the money or the credit I would have walked out with it and been way ahead on the .50 craze.

I offered him the title of my beat-up Ford Ranger, but that was a no-go.

Well you know where it went. Go steal it.

That would be a VERY bad idea. The guy who bought it did so because he has a registered full-auto sear for it, as well as 3-4 other full-auto weapons, to include a M-2HB and an MP-5. He's not a guy whose house I'd burglarize.

Dang man, that's a shame. I sympathise. I've only really seen pics of the 91, but it's certainally a nice piece of equipment.

On a lighter note, did anyone else have the feeling this was gonna end in tears when they read these magic four words?
So, there I was

Exactly why....

When I was in the car business, years ago, I used to carry $5-10K with me at all times. Got alot of deals just 'cause I could wave hard cash in front of someones face.

How about:

'59 Edsel (decent, minor rust, needed motor work)----$150 (sold next day for $900)

'62(?) Austin Healey Sprite (needed intake manifold gasket-$2 part)- $200, fixed it, drove it for 6 months, sold it for $900

66 Chevelle -$50- MINT Body, no motor or trans, sold off pieces for about $1000

And my nicest car ever-87 Firebird Formula- belonged to a friends brother- NEVER DRIVEN except on sunny days--better than new condition---He needed cash (buying house), bought it for $6K---looked up book value the next day @ $9600--I kept that one for several years, sold for $4K when I bought MY house!

Point is...well, I dunno :D
