Hello everyone, I am doing a speach on gun control (pro and con) for one of my college courses. I have almost all the information I need, except I need a definition of "gun control". The definition I have right now is "Regulation of the sale and use of rifles and handguns". Obviously thats only a cover on the subject. If anyone could share or point me in a general direction of a more complete (yet not 2 page long) definition of gun control, I would greatly apperciate it. Thanks -Greg

One view is that gun control is those in power, know who has what, and regulate the :cuss: outta it. Also having total say in what you can own, purchase, etc.,.

Most feel it is being able to hit your intended target.:neener:

Haha I agree that proper gun control includes hitting the target :D. I am hoping to really inform the people in my class about gun control, because there are a lot of anti-gun people in the class. Its funny considering its a police course thats about crime prevention. Yet there are a couple of people that take the stance guns are bad, and that nobody should own them.

The funniest thing was when one woman was up talking about CCW (which she completely butchered by the way) a guy in the class asked her "What would you do if I had a gun in the class right now, and I shot some people, would you want a gun in that situation". She responded with "I would just go out in the hallway or something and call the police. When questioned further she got upset, and said something along the lines of "I don't believe in gun violence", and would not listen to anything anyone had to say. To top that off when questioned about a picture of a loaded round (9mm), she said the entire round (brass and bullet) gets lauched out of the gun. It was pretty easy for me to see that she has probably never fired a gun in her life.

I am glad my instructor is pro-gun, I knew that from the moment I saw a s&w 460 round on his keychain. I will have to cover a lot of things to impress him thats for sure, but I like a challange. Hopefully I can make a few see the light through my speech, although I am not holding out hope.

You should parse the phrase as it exists and then provide various versions of the common usage to demonstrate the true intent behind the the phrase (see 4 below).

Gun Control :

Gun, well we all know that.

con·trol (kən-trōl') pronunciation
tr.v., -trolled, -trol·ling, -trols.

1. To exercise authoritative or dominating influence over; direct. See synonyms at conduct.
2. To adjust to a requirement; regulate: controlled trading on the stock market; controls the flow of water.
3. To hold in restraint; check: struggled to control my temper.
4. To reduce or prevent the spread of: control insects; controlled the fire by dousing it with water.
5.
1. To verify or regulate (a scientific experiment) by conducting a parallel experiment or by comparing with another standard.
2. To verify (an account, for example) by using a duplicate register for comparison.Control -

Not necessarily a definition but what seems to be going on is:

Governments deciding who should possess arms. Which mostly means agents of the said governments. Because we should be protected from ourselves.:banghead:

Or using two hands. :D

GregGry, one of the things I would bring up is the DeShaney decision, to point out that self defense is each of our responsibilities, not the responsibility of the police, or any other organ of the government.

The gun control advocates generally wrap their warped thinking around emotion... the children...one is too many... Columbine (or many other incidents). The woman you spoke of "doesn't believe". If she were to become a crime victim she would become a true believer.

There are many examples of how gun control makes living less safe, on this site and on others, but anecdotal evidence is weak. I think the millions of people who have been killed by their own governments (Communist, Nazi, etc) after they have been disarmed bears testimony to the pitfalls of gun control. Research "democide" -- RJ Rummell. Interesting statistics.

Gun control is like trying to reduce drunk driving by making it tougher for sober people to own cars.

[Not my quote, but saw this here some time ago. Thought it was a keeper.]

I credit the governor of the State of Minnesota for this one: 'Gun control is putting ten rounds (check me on the count) in the SAME HOLE'.

That also includes breath control, and trigger control.

By the way, that particular governor was a SEAL.

Whatever God/god in heaven you have, we need MORE politicians like this one!!!!! In America, in a President, Congressman, Senator, and in an ambassador to the UN, I'd LOVE to have a man or woman, who believed and practiced that, and would have the guts to make that statement before the "assembly" or the media.

I think I would absolutely have a cardiac arrest.

Y'all all take care, and GregGry: sincere good luck in your presentation for the class. I agree with you that the troublesome woman's never fired a gun, much less stood down a criminal (as I HAVE, three times, without firing a damned shot--had I NOT had a handgun, then, I probably wouldn't be here to type this tonight). I also thank my God for your instructor: too many nowadays are leftist liberal socialists, who indoctrinate the students with their rhetoric, NOT truth about common sense, and where the REAL problems with crime lie.

I like it, although I'd amend it a bit:

Leftist extremist so-called "gun control" is tantamount to preventing people who don't drink and drive from owning cars because a few people drink and drive.

Not very snappy, admittedly. The hour is late, and I'm written out.

Amen, Wolf...

...there y'all go. Exactly.

Actually, since vehicles and physicians cause more deaths in America, than firearms, shouldn't we OUTLAW cars and pickups and trucks and doctors????

Just a tongue in cheek thought! To make a point.

Y'all all take care.

Jese Ventura was only about guns for his own means. He had a Permit to Carry and couldn't carry in the Capitol. Once he got that changed, us regular folk were left to hang. Ventura's Gubernatorial days were actually ill-famed. He did a lot to run the state into debt. Sure we appreciated the tax refund checks, but now we're paying for it. Ventura was always saying something stupid, too. Pawlenty and the congress since actually DID get the "Shall Issue" law passed. Once in 2003 and again in 2005

I'm going to have to steal both these quotes.... I'll attribute them when I quote on THR...

Just lie on the floor ...
It'll be over in a minute...
Did I tell you about my bad childhood?...
Remember, I'm the victim...

Gun control is a policy that is predicated on the theory that a 115-pound woman should be capable of fighting off a 250-pound rapist in a dark alley or in her home at 2:30 in the morning with nothing but her bare hands.

It's someone's signature around here:

Gun control is never having to say I missed.

Gun Control is: One Shot One Kill.
Always make sure of your target and what is beyond.
Don't use to much gun, A big gun is useless if you can not hit anything with it.
Remember when you engage your target that if you have to shoot shoot to kill.
