I need a pellet/bb trap. Airguns up to 1000fps. I have a tight budget at $50 in lowes cards. I have welder, wood, screws etc, but I need the materials. Anybody got a nice DIY setup or a commercial product I could buy cheap or mimic cheaper?

currently thinking maybe a sandbox bed with a angled steel deflector plate to direct projectiles down into the sand. This would let me pull out the scraps occasionally to go into the lead bin for casting and I could hopefully just use a magnet to pull out the steel bbs that the kids use.

I made a box out of 3/8" plywood, with an angled back and a shallow bottom. I screwed a piece of 11ga steel to the angled surface and fill the box with old catalogs. I staple cardboard on the front and use painters tape to attach the target (fits a 8-1/2"X11 target in Landscape mode). Every couple of months or so I replace the cardboard. Every few years I empty the insides out and put in fresh catalogs, etc. It seems pretty toxic, so I take it outside to change it. I shoot in my basement.

A 18"x18" box full of rubber or bark mulch should work . Maybe make a 3 sided OSB box to hold/support it . I made something like you described out of OSB and an angled steel plate , it worked good , but I had a little gap at the bottom and sometimes low shots passed thru . House I have now I can shoot from the dining room , thru the hall and out sliding glass door in bedroom , works great .

This is what I use. Get a plastic bucket with a lid. Cut a hole in the lid. Fill the bucket with rubber bark. Cover the open end with Saran wrap or a thin plastic bag. This keeps the rubber bark in the bucket as you shoot. Lay the target paper on the plastic. I use one half sheet of paper. Snap lid on and shoot in your living room or wherever.

Rather than sand, I have used and recommend an old towel. Sand scatters and pellets may jump out, not so with an old towel. Lead is still retrievable.

Way less than $50. Used garage scrap, glue, screws and large paper clamps.

Backstop is 2 layers of Home Depot galvanived sheet metal, thickest they had. Make up your own dimensions to suit what you want for what ever target you use..

Cheapest Junction box of the size that works for you.
Several bricks of Duct seal AKA "monkey shi@%" enough to layer the whole box about an inch to 2 inches deep.
A couple binder clips
If you have money left over maybe some nice rubber feet and a handle

Gut box, add duct seal, drill hole(s), add clip(s), feet and handle. Have trap that will last you FOREVER. My oldest is 20+ years old.

All should be available at Lowes except the binder clips.

Note the board behind the trap is in front of my home fuse box as a completely unnecessary additional layer of protection. There is NO WAY even a .22LR is going through that trap and a steel box much less ANY "normal" air rifle. If you get into PCP large bore stuff .25, .30, 45 etc. caliber with enough juice behind them, I would have to test the setup and add duct seal or other measures as necessary but for any NORMAL AG shooting this setup will stop ANYTHING and will last FOREVER. Just clean it out now and then.

I shoot my AG’s comparatively a lot. I have averaged about 30 shots per day for 2 or 3 years since I have been logging my shots. I would tear up the front cardboard on something like this way to often for my liking where my duct seal is basically forever with a little “pealing” of lead once in a blue moon.

The rubber mulch has always intrigued me but just seems like it would be too much work if you shot a lot.

I use a metal trap like the one above but I put a triangular wheel chock made of solid rubber inside.

I have several... an electrical box with two layers of duct seal... a moment made metal one I got at a garage sale... a slice of log ... several catalogs taped together... it's relatively easy for .177 n .22 airgun...

For the bb's hang towels or sheets of a suitable thickness and the stop bb's will... can be shaped to catch bb'

I made this trap out of a electrical box I got it scrap and landed with duct seal 2 layers from home depot. I weled twostrips top n bottom for magnets to hold paper. I do line the front with file stock or cereal box to help keep dust ect in... I place the target on top when in use. I welded 4 nuts to the bottom to keep the box high enough for the front door to open n close n sit level
Simple n neat 20230205_105742.jpg 20230205_105754.jpg 20230205_105811.jpg 20230205_105854.jpg 20230205_105918.jpg

I see several posts use duct seal...how do you retrieve the lead for reuse?

With the angled back into loose towels, the lead can be recycled into .38 cal bullets.

Or are you AR only?

Ya just pick out the blobs of lead... no need to grab each one. They will hopefully accumulate at the Bullseye :)

I don't reuse the lead but like tallpaul said the lead tends to accumulated into large flattened structures you just sort of pry out with a screwdriver. If your goal is to reuse all your lead you might want to go rubber mulch route as that will be easier to dump and have clean lead.
