A working tax paying smith called me this morning I've known for years as I was leaving for work. He has a hard arse customer giving him grief over a small frame Ruger trigger job. He can't stand my buddy's work. The trigger is not right. He's all but asking for a S&W trigger on his 101 or what ever there little tank is.

He ask if I can stop by at lunch with the wifes 60 Pro, 686P and the PF-9. Of course I will. He's had my back for years. He has none of the above in his shop at this time.

I show up with the requested pistols. Old smith starts out handing the cust the wifes J Frame. Cust. does not like the trigger. Smith hands him my 686P. Cust. states now we are getting there. He then hands him my PF-9. Cust like elements of the PF-9 trigger but states there junk.

Smith turns around and tell's know it all ytube cust. This man does better trigger jobs than I can do. He's not for hire and works them in on his bench/desk and even fine tunes them at his range. He then asked me if we could open the 60 Pro. He then told the dude. This a spring and stone job you can't afford. And you will never make the Ruger do this,,,,, never!!!

My old smith friend asked if it would be OK if I looked over the work. I opened her up and the work was spot on. Nothing more to be done! Perfect work with even some cut down springs. My smith friend/mentor and I fight about cutting springs. He is a cutter and reformer and I'm a spring maker or dia. reducer.

Bottom line. The cust. could not be made happy and refused to pay the bloody $85 including spring kit. The pistol went into a safe. After the cust. bowed up,, got a tad stupid. He then calmed down when he opened his stupid eye's and figured out everything racked up and saw a vault bigger than his house full of full auto weapons. Yes my smith friend is a class III mental giant. I paid for my mentors services, gave him his pistol and he left cussing us to the tune. Smith will give me my money back. With not a clue this 70+ year old smith has held my hand.

My mentor gave me a hug after he left and 100lbs of salt for my tank. And a trigger hammer forged blank j frame action. He said,,, you know your grandfather sold me the 5 ton hammer and forge to make these parts.

So my $85 to free a mentor bought me tech I already had, less the time. But man OOOO man was it a warm fuzzy. And my coming .50 BMG will be cheap. :)

I was very moved today and greatful I could back a mentor. ;)

Some customers are walking nightmares. Dealing with them was the worst experience of doing gun work. I would rather spend 3 days with a checkering file doing a frontstrap than have to deal with some people. But they're definitely the minority.

If I wanted to take the time and disk space, I could tell some stories about PITA customers, but also a few about gunsmiths who could give them a run for the money. Trouble is I was never around when a PITA customer met a PITA gunsmith. Would have been fun.
