It was a well run match with a lot of very accomplished shooters. Several of the 54 in attendance were current and past champions including a few record holders.

The format was 6 individual matches, 3 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday, 600 yards, prone, 20 shots for record in each match.

General categories were F Class and Sling. I was shooting in the F Class group.

On Saturday the winds were light earlier but got tricky as the day progressed. The scores reflected it.

I started the 1st match in the pits pulling the target for a past national champion. He shot an impressive 200 with 18 X’s. For reference, the 10 ring is 6” and the X ring is 3”.

By the end of the day there were 3 shooters that “cleaned” all three matches (all 60 shots inside the 6” 10 ring for a score of 600). I dropped one shot on the first match of the day (in the 9 ring) but cleaned the next two and was in 6th place with a 599-34X

The conditions on Sunday were nearly identical to Saturday. Almost dead calm early then becoming unpredictably variable later.

I shot better scoring a 200-16X in my first match, dropped one the 2nd with a 199-13x and finishing strong on the 3rd with another 200-16X. This is my target on the last match. The 9 was my first sighter (you get 2 before your 20 shots for record).

At the end of the weekend I finished 4th overall with a 1198-79X and feel really good about it. It was my first time to shoot in a championship match. The fella that won it shot a phenomenal 1200-82X. That’s what MOA all day looks like.

When you shoot against this level of competition in a format like this you have to be nearly perfect

Looks like they are going to have to reduce the F target again.
I was there when they went from the 600 yard MR-1 with 12" ten ring to the FCA with 6" ten as guns and techniques improved for "belly bench rest."

Great shooting! Amazing how precise the F class game has gotten. I remember the days when a decent shooter with a glass bedded hunting .308 could shoot a respectable score in FTR! I was somewhat interested, but this was just at the time when the gear really took off, so my interest faded as fast as my savings would have had I stayed interested.

We have our MN state Vintage/JCG/Sprgfld match this Sunday. I'll try to get some pics up. Probably won't have any of neatly pasted targets though. We tend to use all of the black and some of the white through 3 relays before re-facing, although you will occasionally see a clean prone score.
