My 22LR preference these days is mid-range to target ammo, but I'm still trying to be rid of my Rem Golden Bullets from my almost decade old stash. It shoots very well in many of my 22s, and though it's dirty and fouls my revolver cylinders, the real reason I'll not go back once I'm done with it is ruptured cases. It happens with GBs much more often than any other 22 ammo I've used. These two happened last week.

My friend had a full case head separation in a Beretta 21 a while back using Remington thunderbolts.

I had a ruptured case recently with Winchester super x about a decade old, in my single six.

Try doing a Google search on the lot number. Maybe there's a recall and you can swap them -- if not, try contacting Remington and see whether they offer a trade. Worst they can do is say no.

At the risk of being pilloried, my pre-Obama stash of Golden Bullets has been fairly good to me, the current stuff much less so.

I have never experienced anything like this with the Golden Boolitz. I actually like them as they have a bit more "zip" than my Federal bulk or Automatch stuff. Like mentioned above, I would check the lot number for a potential recall.

I have had duds, FT Feeds, FT Extracts and even a case separating a time or two from just about every mass-maker of .22 Ammo; including Remington. Aguila, Winchester, Federal and CCI. I guess you make ten billion of them working 24/7 you are bound to get lots of iffy ones out of the pile.

Now I cant recall any duds from SK, RWS, Lapua or Eley.. or even Norma. But I also haven’t shot anywhere near the numbers of these rounds compared to the others above.

Stay safe.

Maybe the gun was half the problem. A generous chamber and/or firing slightly out of battery combined with poor quality brass could be an issue.
They are inconsistent in my CZ Scout, but never a split or blown head since I first started using them during the first shortage back in 2004.

OP:

If you lived here I would offer to buy what remains, although my ammo stash is pretty large.

I've had so many dud primers, and some FT Extract with the weak, cheap, bulk Winchester 330 (or similar) brand of .22LR variety.

Golden Bullets function much better than 'all-American' Winchester in my M&P and Ruger Mark IV.

I have had one golden bullet blow out the side right at the rim. It was in a 10/22 and the guns fault as it decided to quit going completely into battery. It just made a spewing sound with a lot of smoke blowing out of the action. After cleaning the dry lube I was using and returning to good ol' oil it has never had another problem with any ammo except dud rounds. The only other rupture I have had was with a newer made Winchester super X and it blew all to pieces with a big bang in a dedicated 22 LR AR upper.

I probably have 1500 or so rounds of GBs sitting on the shelf and will eventually shoot them up. GBs are something I don't see for sale around here now. There is quite a bit of Winchester that just sits there while other brands quickly disappear.

flu-era remington golden bullets, norma tac22, federal automatch, herters (cabela house-branded winchester) have all been awful in my ruger sr22: ftf, fte, squibs, cracked cases, improperly seated bullets. i’ve contacted the makers and, 6 weeks on, no reply.

cci-made 22lr ammo (standard, blazer, minimags) remains excellent.

Wow, that's bad!

I had a case from the later 90's but other than a few duds and the usual dirty issues, no separations like that.

WIN 555s/333s is the brand with the second most frequent case raptures and duds I've experienced. I just shot up the last of this junk last month also from my old stash, finally and for good. Just had a dud on an Eley Club round a few weeks ago, my 1st.

It's happened in no less than than four of my 22LRs, all semi-autos. I don't shoot crappy ammo in my CZs or Bergara.

How many different guns does this happen in?

Ive shot up a bunch of the Winchester 333/555 ammo and I’ve never had an issue. It even has been pretty accurate for me.

I just finished my last box of Winchester 555. Nothing that bad but probably 10 duds that wouldn’t fire if rotated and restruck. I did find one with the bullet in the case mouth sideways and one stray bullet (sans case) rolling around in the bottom of the box. These were 2019 era loads so no Covid excuses.

I have some 2021 vintage Rem golden bullets up next. The ones from 20 years ago were fine (for cheap rimfire).

I think federal bulk from 20 years ago was dang good stuff. Everything I’ve tried in the last ten years federal has offered inconsistent report, and some malfunctions through my marlin 60.
